Howser House
to open Saturday
The Howser House at
Kings Mountain National
Military Park will be open
for visitors Saturday, July 16
from 10 a.m-4 p.m.
The 1803 stone house is
usually closed to the public.
It was built by
Revolutionary War veteran
and stonemason Henry
Howser. Its thick, sturdy,
stone walls conveyed pros-
perity and affluence at a
time when most were living
in log houses. The home
remained in the family for
several generations and was
one of the more prosperous
farms in the region.
The house is not handicap
accessible and parking is
limited. Visitors may reach
the house from Rock House
Road, off SC 216
(Battleground Road).
Parking is located near the
entrance to the house. A
shuttle service from the
parking area will be provid-
ed to the house. Good walk-
ing shoes are recommended.
In case of inclement
weather, the house will not
be open. For more informa-

golf tourney set
The annual Chamber
Tailgate and Tee Reunion
will be held August 12 at the
Cleveland County
Fairgrounds.

The Tailgate and Tee golf
tournament will be played
August 11 or 12 at Cleveland
Country Club. It is a cap-
tain’s choice, four-person

BC Crisis Center
sets silent auction
The Bessemer City Crisis
Center will sponsor its
annual “Share Your Heart”
silent auction benefit on
Saturday, July 16 from 12
noon - 2 p.m. at St.
Andrew’s Episcopal Church
Community Building, 1303
N. 12th St., Bessemer City.
The silent auction will fea-
ture a variety of household
and home decor items, fine
art, dinnerware and gift cer-
tificates. Proceeds benefit
crisis center programs avail-
able to Bessemer City area
residents.
“The ‘Share Your Heart’
event is the signature fund
raiser for the Bessemer City
Crisis Center,” said Susan
Hook, president of the crisis
center’s board of directors.
“We have a wide variety of
items for this year’s auction
and we expect that this
year’s event will be a great
success.”
Light refreshments will be
served and musical enter-
tainment will be presented
by the High Lonesome
Bluegrass Band. The public
is invited to attend. For

The Bessemer City Crisis
Center is an agency of the
United Way of Gaston
County and operates a thrift
store located at 111 N. 12th
St. in downtown Bessemer
City.
Run/Walk to aid
St. Jude Hospital
The first annual Pro-
Fitness 5K Charity
Run/Walk will be held July
30 on Washington Street,
Shelby. Registration is at
7:30 am. and the race begins
at 8:30.
Cost of registration for the
race is $15.
There will also be a one
mile fun run/walk at 9:15
a.m. Registration is free for
children ages 10 and
younger. Adults registration
is $10.
All proceeds will be
donated directly to St. Jude
Children’s Hospital. There
will be a children booth set
up for kids to make cards
and crafts for the children at
St. Jude.
All participants will
receive a free breakfast, t-
shirt and goody bag. Prizes
will be given to the top three
male and female partici-
pants.

Acclaimed ghost story
writer Nancy Roberts will
speak Monday, July 25 at 7
p.m. at Cleveland County
Memorial Library.
The program is free for
adults and school children,
but tickets must be picked
up at the library. After her
presentation, Roberts will
sign books. Books will be
available for purchase and
light refreshments will be
served.
Roberts is the author of 25
books about the supernatu-
ral, including “Civil War
Ghost Stories and Legends,”
and “Blackbeard and Other
Pirates of the Atlantic
Coast.”
