Baker, Owner/Manager DEVELOPMENT From 1A from South Carolina,” he said. Darnell believes Cleveland's location between Geenville/Spartanburg and Charlotte helps it be com- petitive. Darnell gives the state good marks in helping with economic development, but Kings Mountain Mayor Rick Murphrey would like to see more from the state. “North Carolina is a little | bit behind on giving incen- tives and marketing the whole state. South Carolina does more,” he said. ° Locally, Shelby was recently hit with the announcement that - Copeland is closing its local plant and moving opera- tions back to Ohio where it is headquartered. Darnell described it as a “huge loss to us.” But he said there was nothing that could be done to prevent it. Southeastern Container’s recent move to Kings Mountain is the best success the county’s economic development efforts have had recently, he said. The county has lost three grocery stores - Winn Dixie in Kings Mountain and Shelby, Harris Teeter in Kings Mountain and Bi Lo in Shelby. Darnell said this reflects a grocery industry trend toward consolidation. Inside Kings Mountain, the city has numerous tools to recruit industry, accord- ing to Murphrey. These include an upcoming web- site and brochure, competi- tive gas, water and utility rates, an industrial incentive policy and long range land development planning for industry, residential and greenway spaces. Planning Director Steve Killian works as a liaison between the city and new and expanding businesses and industry to fast track permitting. The city contin- ues to cultivate its relation- ship with existing business and industry by way of fre- quent visits and an industri- al appreciation breakfast. Murphrey said quality of life projects like downtown revitalization, the city’s sta- tus as a Gateway to the state and national parks, recre- ation, the Patrick Center, ° Kings Mountain Historical Museum and Little Theatre and hospital expansions all work to make this area attractive to business own- ers. While there is no one per- son who is named as a busi- ness and industry recruiter for Kings Mountain, staff including those from utility departments work together to help businesses and industry move here and expand. “Everybody working together to sell Kings Mountain,” Murphrey said. Does Kings Mountain need a specific position devoted entirely to recruit- ment? Murphrey doesn’t think so. “You would be duplicat- ing so many activities,” he said. Murphrey said he believes the majority of resi- dents understand the need to grow and bring more jobs to the community. CAUTION From 1A Other safety tips include: Use flame resistant cos- tumes.
