GARY STEWART gstewart@kingsmountainherald.com . Kings Mountain's Mountaineers were once again their own worst enemy Friday, Oct. 28 in a 35-21 loss to R-S Central. : The Mountaineers got another outstanding offensive perform- ance from the conference’s top rusher, Sidney Goode, who ram- bled for 150 yards and a touch- down. However, R-S Central used a much more-balanced offensive attack and also took advantage of Kings Mountain turnovers to turn the game into a rout in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers turned the ball over on three of their four sec- ond half possessions with R-S Central turning a 14-14 halftime tie into a 14-point victory. The big weapons for the Hilltoppers were fullback Steven Boykins, who gained 121 yards rushing and scored two touch- downs, and quarterback George Hines who added 101 yards rush- ing and one TD, hit 7-of-13 passes for 115 yards and another TD, and used his running ability to put the nail in KM’s coffin with two fourth quarter scoring drives which broke a 21-all tie. R-S Central Coach Mike Cheek was quoted in a Forest City paper the day before the game saying the Hilltoppers probably couldn't stop Goode, but they would have to keep him out of the end zone. They were successful in that except for a third quarter drive on which Goode scored from nine yards out to tie the game at 21. Goode gained 106 of his yards came on two of the Mounties’ three scoring drives. He gained 57 of the team’s 72-yards on a touch- down drive on their first posses- sion. Fullback J.J. McClain pow- ered his way into the end zone from11 yards out and Will Franks added the PAT for a 7-0 lead. - On KM'’s only possession of the a Mounties fall to R-S Central 35-21 GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain quarterback Brandon McClain (10) fires a pass against R-S Central. Most of the rest of the night, the R-S defense kept Goode from breaking anything long. R-S, which had to punt follow- ing the opening kickoff, answered McClain’s early TD with two scor- ing marches which resulted in a 14-7 lead with 4:42 left in the half. On the first drive, R-S went 80 yards in 12 lays with Hines scor- ing from six yards out and Derek Swinkey adding the PAT for a 7-7 tie. After a KM punt, the Hilltoppers drove 91 yards with the TD coming on a 20-yard pass from Hines to Brandon Arrowood for a 14-7 edge. After an exchange of punts, KM quarterback Brandon McClain found speedy Javon Potts behind the R-S secondary for a 70-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left in the half to tie the score again at 14. Moments later, the Mountaineers recovered a Robert Harris fumble at the 43 and passes to Nate Marable and Goode put the ball at the R-S 34 with six sec- onds left. Franks’ 50-yard field goal attempt fell far short. Things began to go downhill quickly for the Mounties after halftime. On KM'’s opening drive, R-S Central's Patrick Davis inter- cepted a McClain pass at the KM 45 and an unsportsmanlike con- duct call against KM gave R-S a first down at the 26. Harris picked up eight yards around end, but was tackled out of bounds giving R-S a first down at the KM 11. Boykins went up the gut for eight yards, then scored from the three to put R-S up 21-14 with 8:58 left in the third period. Ross and J.J. McClain shared the running load and Brandon McClain hit Potts with a 15-yard pass to get the KM offense mov- ing momentarily, but the drive ended with a fumble at the R-S 13 yard line. R-S drove to the KM 38 before having to punt and downed the RETSENTESe, = JV Mounties finish 9-1 : Kings Mountain High's JV football team closed out a 9-1 season Thursday night with a 35-14 victory over Burns in Lawndale. - Tevorris Crosby, Neil Scott, Shariff Burris, Jerry Lowery and an eighth grader who is not listed on the roster scored touch- downs for the Mountaineers.
