KM Council candidate Edwards dies ANDIE BRYMER ¢ abrymer@kingsmountainherald.com Garland Wayne Edwards, a candidate for an at-large seat on the Kings Mountain City Council, died Thursday at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville. Rose Ella Edwards described her husband as “well loved” and a “beauti- ful person.” The two were married March 22, 1993. Mrs. Edwards owned a Charlotte gospel music store at the time. She spotted Edwards through the store window and commented on him to her son. Her son passed along his mother’s business card. Edwards later visited the store and the two met and were soon married. The couple moved to Kings Mountain in the mid- 1990s because Mrs. Edwards wanted to live in her husband’s home town. Mrs. Edwards said her husband's family looked up to him. Several family members followed in his career footsteps, driving trucks. Edwards also for- merly worked as a correc- tional officer, security guard and police officer and in auto sales. He served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart and other honors. He was a member of the American Legion. Edwards, 55, was among six men running for the two at-large seats. Incumbents in that race are Rick Moore and Houston Corn and challengers are Roy “Butch” Pearson, Dean Spears and Lamar Fletcher. Edwards’ name appeared on the ballot and he received 99 votes. Houston Corn and Dean Spears won the two seats. MAYOR From 1A Other members of that board include Jack Hamrick, Tommy Greene, Jo Boggs, Shearra Miller and Richard Hooker. Miller lives in Kings Mountain. In the race for Cleveland County Sanitary . District, incumbents Alan Norman and Timothy Brooks kept their seats. Newcomers Don Melton and C.J. Pete Pedersen also won places on that board. John Cline, Sylvia Lattimore and Dewey Cook round out the board. The canvass for this election will be held Now. 15. GROVER From 1A On beer and wine sales Green said “in my heart I believe people are against it.” If the issue comes up, he plans to go door-to-door to find out. Brent White said much needs to be done for the town. He supports trying to get the city’s wells up and running to drop the cost of water. White said alcohol sales are the only way a grocery store will come to Grover. He predicted it would bring in more revenue to the town.
