BRYMER/HERALD Cherpak Senior Center Volunteer of the Year ANDIE BRYMER abrymer@kingsmountainherald.com Archie Cherpak enjoys the Patrick Senior Center enough to give its pro- grams 183 hours of her time this year. The high number earned Cherpak the Volunteer of the Year title for 2005. “I wasn’t working for that [the award], I'do it because I like it,” she said. Cherpak teaches a craft class, per- forms with the line dancing group at nursing and assisted living facilities, folds newsletters, serves as vice-presi- dent of the advisory board and translat- ed the center’s brochure into Spanish. She also serves on the volunteer com- mittee which means she helped out with a recent flu immunization clinic, craft" bazaar and commodities distribution. “I just enjoy it. I like to see the smile on their faces when they are happy,” she said Cherpak said she would be at the cen- ter more if she didn’t have responsibili- ties at home. She first got involved over two years ago when a neighbor invited her to a fit- . ness class at the center. She kept coming to activities and soon staff member Carolyn Bell recruited her to teach crafts. Cherpak continues to teach the class every Tuesday. While crochet is her pas- sion, Cherpak varies the class based on her students’ interests. “We just go with the flow,” she said. Cherpak'’s class is selling $1 tickets on an afghan they made to raise funds for a new speciality sewing machine. Center Director Monty Thornburg calls Cherpak a “neat lady.” “We're lucky to have her here,” he said. Because Cherpak is so active at the center, keeping her award a secret was difficult. Thornburg had ‘to sneak a ban- ner with Cherpak’s name on it passed her while she was helping set up for the recent volunteer banquet. - Senior citizens have until May 15 to decide on Medicare Part D plan Senior citizens have from now to May 15 to choose from 40 Medicare Part D prescription plans. “It’s very complicated,” said Monty Thornburg, city aging director. Staff at the Patrick Senior Center have been training since March to help seniors decide which plan they need. Free counseling and sign-up sessions are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the center. Those attending should take a list of their med- ications and any recent letters from an insurance provider. For more informa- tion, call 704-734-0447.
