The Kings Mountain Herald JOSEPH BRYMER / HERALD Kings Mountain's Susie Potter (5) takes a shot in Monday’s season-opening 1-0 victory over Crest at John Gamble Stadium. KM kickers blank Crest in opening season match Kings Mountain High's women's soccer team opened its season Monday night at home with a 1-0 victory over Crest. KM couldn’t find the back of the net until the last nine minutes. Although the Mounties out-shot the Chargers 12-5, the match was up-and-down the field all night. “The defense was really quite solid tonight as Jennifer Lingg anchored the center of the back- field with Caitlyn Suber and Kelly Bolt strangling the front runners on the outside,” said Coach Dan Potter. TnI OPporh in were limited on both sides of the field. KM'’s Susie Potter had a blast that sailed just over the net in the first 15 minutes of the match, and Katie Cooke had a good oppor- tunity sail high after Bennett Suber set her up with a great pass. The game's only goal was the result of the work of three freshmen. Alex Edwards began the attack with a po to Ashley Witherspoon on the left wing. Witherspoon then beat her defender and dribbled to the end line where she sent a great crossing pass to the back post. Two Mountaineer attackers nearly collided when try- ing to shove in the goal but Avery Dahl and Jordan Doty were in great position for the shot. Doty hit the shot that was deflected back out to her and she hammered the rebound into the net for the winning goal. : “Although none of these freshmen started, they gave us a big lift when they came off the bench. This year’s players are truly so evenly tal- ented that my job is going to be to find who is playing the best on any given day and let them play,” Potter said. “Competition is really intense JV Mountaineers play scoreless tie Kings Mountain High's JV soccer team opened its season Monday with a 0-0 tie with Crest. Brittany Rodden played an outstanding game at goal and Kinsley Mashburn and Danielle St. Just stood out in the forward position. Outstanding players on defense were Brooke Hayes, Rachael Perkins, Brianna Green and Destiny Pitman. : “Maggie Hall, Megan Blanton and Heather Yarbrough came in and played great in the mid- field,” said Coach Erik Price. “This was our first game and I was proud of the way these ladies came out and played hard the whole game.” Kings Mountain was scheduled to play East Burke last night. in our practice sessions and that will only make all of our players better.” Lauren Suber recorded the shutout as she fumed away a very difficult shot in the final sec- onds.
