In COPD, airflow in the bronchial tubes is partially blocked, making breathing difficult. As the disease worsens, it may become hard to carry out everyday activities. Treatment depends on the severi- ty of the COPD and associated symptoms, but will generally include: avoiding tobacco smoke and air pollution; reducing and con- trolling symptoms such as shortness of breath; increasing your activity level; and improving your overall health. People with severe COPD may benefit from oxygen therapy, which increases the amount of oxy- gen in the blood and lungs, may improve shortness of breath, and may prolong life. COPD and Oxygen Therapy Oxygen therapy can be beneficial for people with a variety of respiratory condi- tions.
