JOYCE DIXON DYE
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Joyce Dixon Dye, 68, 802 Henry
Street, died April 17, 2006 at Hospice of Wendover, Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the
late Lee and Frances Miller Dixon. She was office manager for
Dye Electric in Kings Mountain and a member of First Baptist
— Church in Kings Mountain.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene
Dye of Kings Mountain; sons Rex Dye and
wife Tonya of Kings Mountain and Barney
Dye and wife Debbie of Kings Mountain;
sister Mary Dixon Comstock and husband
Wayne of Fayetteville; and grandchildren
Lauren Dye, Hannah Dye, Samuel Dye,
Madison Dye and Sarah Dye.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m.
Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Rev.
Tim Elmore and Lindsay Comstock offici-

JACK EUGENE GOINS JR.
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Jack Eugene Goins Jr., 53, formerly
of 138 W. Mountain Street, died April 18, 2006 at South Haven
Assisted Living in Gastonia.
A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Jack
Eugene Goins. He was also preceded in
death by his stepfather, Charles Rhinehart.
He is survived by his son, Jonathon
Goins of Rock Hill, SC; mother Martha
Myers Rhinehart of Shelby; brothers Dean
Goins and wife Robbin of Kings Mountain,
Ron Goins and wife Marion of Washington
state, Clifford Tesner and wife Brenda of
Shelby, Mark Tesner and wife Donna of
Shelby, and William Tesner of Shelby; sis-
ter Lynda Skinner of Washington state; and
grandmother Willie Myers of Kings
Mountain.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Joseph Porter at
2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Ollie Harris Memorial
Chapel. Visitation is from 1-2 p.m. Thursday prior to the serv-
ice at Harris Funeral Home.

GOINS
ALLEN RAY GILBERT
SHELBY - Allen Ray Gilbert, 75, 140 Shadowgate Drive,
went to be with the Lord peacefully on April 17, 2006 at
Carolina's Specialty-Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.
He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was son of
the late Russell and Edith Whitehall Gilbert.
He was a Mason and Past Master of the Marion Lodge
#103, Marion, IL. He loved painting, horseback riding and
fishing. He was treasurer of the Egyptian Kennel Club for 25
years. He was retired from Salem Printing, Salem, IL.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene Beniez Gilbert
of Shelby; stepmother, Mary Gilbert of Sarasota, FL; sons
Stuart C. Gilbert and wife Joy of Shelby and Eric P.C. Gilbert
and wife Juana of Salem, IL; sister Beverly Gilbert Robinson;
and grandchildren Kurt, Scot, Zachery, Krystal, Jessica,
Juleigh and Thomas.
The family will hold a private service. The family will be at
the home, 140 Shadowgate Drive, Shelby.

JAMES ‘RED’ ELLISON
KINGS MOUNTAIN - James Edward “Red” Ellison, 74, 134
Yarbro Road, died April 13, 2006 at Gaston Memorial
Hospital, Gastonia. :
He was born in Cleveland County. He was the son of the
late James Ervin and Bertha Stroupe Ellison. He was the hus-
band of the late Vivian Sparks “Snowbird” Ellison. He was
also preceded in death by grandson Phillip Haney and broth-
er Melvin Ellison.
He was a member of Sunrise Baptist Church, Kings
Mountain, where he served as Deacon and Trustee. He was
retired from Turbo Conveyor, Kings Mountain. He served in
the United States Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Hermie Sparks Ellison of Kings
Mountain; sons Richard Ellison and wife Dana of Gastonia,
James H. Ellison and wife Elizabeth of Shelby, and David L.
Norris and wife JoAnn of Charlotte; daughter Demetria
Norris Johnson of Gastonia; brothers Tommy Ellison of Old
Fort, Doyle Ellison of Kings Mountain and Alvin Ellison of
Greenville, SC; sisters Elizabeth Lowery of Shelby, Edith
Goforth of Gastonia, Ruth Cooke of Fallston, Viola Killgore of
Tennessee, and Nellie Mae Thrift of Lincolnton; four grand-
children Leigh Ann Irizarry, Rikki Ellison, Michael Allen and
Stacey Anthony; and one great-grandchild Kayleigh Irizarry.
The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Dennis Harmon at
3 p.m. Monday at Sunrise Baptist Church. Interment was in
Oak View Baptist Church cemetery.

LEONARD ‘ANDY’ ANDERSON
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Leonard W. “Andy” Anderson, 85,
307 North Carpenter Street, died April 16, 2006 at Kings
Mountain Hospital.
He was born in Cooke County, TN, son of the late Walter
and Hettie Anderson. He was also preceded in death by his
son, David Wray Anderson.
He was a retired body shop repairman, and an active and
dedicated member of Eastside Baptist Church in Kings
Mountain where he had as Deacon, treasurer, and in many
other capacities. He was a faithful Christian, a man of strong
character and unfailing honesty. He loved his family and his
church. He was a United States Air Force veteran serving
during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene Hartsoe Anderson of
Kings Mountain; son Terry Anderson and wife Carmen of
Kings Mountain; brothers Mack Anderson of Bessemer City
and Boyd Anderson of Marion; and special nieces Marlene
Bennett of Kings Mountain and Elaine Hord of Louisiana.
The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Eugene Land at 4
p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Eastside Baptist Church.
Interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

ing of city council.
“This has been a long time
coming but we are just
beginning our community-
wide campaign on beautifi-
cation,” said Sandra
Murphrey, co-chair with
Mary Anne Hendricks of the
project. Murphrey said the
city has completed a number
of steps to earn this designa-
tion and that citizens will be
encouraged to volunteer on a
number of committees,
including recycling, safety,
littering, clean-up, etc.

fied in the city’s existing

In a related zoning item,
city council may set a public
hearing on “uses in

Central Business Districts”
as zoning relates to public
and private clubs, night
clubs, dance halls, flea mar-
kets, go kart tracks, etc.

Open Gate Garden Club meets
Open Gate Garden Club met April 12 at Boyce Memorial
ARP Church with Louise Roberts and her daughter, Linda
‘Tallon, as hostesses. Refreshments were served to 14 mem-
bers and two guests. Margie Bridges, President, welcomed
members and the Club Collect was read in unison.
Bridges introduced Flo Davies, who gave a program on
Hummingbirds.
Timely tips were given by Betty Alexander.
An arrangement, April Showers, contained Corkscrew wil-
low and roses with greenery.
A sheet with program /hostess assignments was passed
around for members to choose which month they would
have programs or be hostess next year.
The annual Spring 2006 Litter Sweep was discussed.
Melba Boyles and Polly Phifer will be hostesses for the
May 10 meeting and have planned a tour of Wing Haven
Garden.
Olivia Mayhew won the friendship basket.
