SPORTS The Kings Mountain Herald April 27, 2006- MORRIS From 1B “Iwas a pretty good old country player, but Ifell in love with my wife (the for- mer April Brown) and that changed a lot of things. She was in nursing school at Baptist Hospital in Winston- Salem. I had a little old Volkswagen and every week- end I'd turn that thing loose and it would go to Winston- Salem. Bobby Biddix and Paul Hendricks were at Wake Forest then and I'd spend every weekend with them.” Morris doesn’t regret not signing a pro contract, nor does he regret ending his playing career to get mar- ried. “I wound up with a good . wife and a good family and a good career in the scrap busi- ness,” he said. “It doesn’t hinge on a hurt arm or bad break. I haven't regretted it at all.” Morris’s sons, Neil and Chris, both played football and baseball at Kings Mountain High. His daugh- ter, Amy, is a teacher here. All of his children and four grandchildren still live in Kings Mountain and he says “it’s good to have them close by.” ] Now 63, Morris is not into sports. He occasionally Jerry Morris, Jerry Webster and Don Horn, left to right, were teammates at Bethware High School and American Legion Post 155. Wo, watches them on TV. He stays in shape by working hard at his scrap metal build- ing and on his nearby farm where he runs about 50 head of cattle. “There's always fences to mend and holes to dig,” he says. Going into the Hall of Fame is an honor, he says. “I don’t look at it as what I accomplished,” he said. “It’s just what fell in place over the years. Bobby and I were like an old 1-2 punch. It will be an honor for me, especial- ly at my age. “It all started down at Parkgrace,” he added. “You look back and your parents were always the biggest influence. They always got us there and back.” WANT TO GO? The Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony is Saturday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at Kings Mountain High School. Tickets are $10.
