Tri-County Conference baseball game. KM blanks Chase 10-0 in five innings GARY STEWART gstewart@kingsmountainherald.com Kings Mountain scored six runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Chase 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night at Lancaster Field. Kevin Bell pitched three-hit ball and struck out five over four innings to get the win. Ryan Leach came on to pitch the fifth inning and struck out the side. The Mountaineers sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning to run their Southwestern 3A Conference record to 7- 4 and their overall mark to 10-8. Kings Mountain was sched- uled to play at Crest in a non-conference game yesterday. The Mountaineers travel to Shelby Friday and to East Rutherford Tuesday before returning home for their final two regular season games against R-S Central and Burns. Trey Glass’s single to right field gave the Mountaineers and early 2-0 lead Tuesday. He plated Drew Martin, who led off the game by being hit by a pitch, and Isaac Proctor, who singled. Back-to-back singles by Brantley Blalock and Trey Robinson increased the lead to 3-0, and Jeffry Howell's infield hit made it 4-0. Two outs later Martin beat out an infield hit and two more runs scored. Back-to-back doubles by Blalock and Howell increased the lead to 7-0 in the second,and Alan Breakfield’s single drove in Howell to make it 8-0. The Mountaineers failed to score in the third but increased the lead to 9-0 in the fourth when Howell singled and scored on Breakfield’s double off the right-center field fence. An error and singles by pinch-hitters Junior Ruff and Ryan Bolin loaded the bases in the fifth, and the game ended on the 10-run mercy rule when Alan Heinbach drew a walk. Chase never seriously threatened to score. Bell issued a walk in the first inning, and the Trojans got a runner as far as second base in the third on two KM errors. Bell gave up two harmless singles in the fourth inning. B The Mountaineers lost all three of their games in last - week’s Scotland County High Easter Tournament in Laurinburg. The Mounties fell to perennial state 4A power Richmond County 6-1 in the opener. Martin, Isaac Proctor, Ruff, Richard Anderson and Howell had a hit apiece for KM. The Mounties lost to Wesleyan Christian 7-4. Cody Barrett led the hitting with 2-for-3. Robinson and Glass each hit a home run, and Breakfield and Blalock each went 1-for-3. KM fell to Anson County 7-2. Glass led the hitting with 3- for-3 and Ruff, Barrett, Howell and Robinson had a hit each. Burns (B) 11.96; Hines &M TRACK fifth 12.24. Leather V6, Hybrid LAREDO, 4x4, 12,000 Wes, Not a Lease Patriots beat oN 7 April 27, 2006 Shelby 15-7, still undefeated in division Kings Mountain Middle School's baseball team resumed Tri-County Conference play Monday with a 15-7 win over Shelby. The Patriots are undefeated in their divi- sion heading into the final four games of the season. If they hold on to first place they will host the conference championship game on May 9. Ryan Doty pitched three innings and Chris Allen pitched the final four Monday. Doty gave up three hits and Allen four. The Patriots collected 15 hits and also took advantage of five walks and three Shelby errors. Cody Austin’s double, Doty’s walk and Jonathan Allen's two-out triple gave KM a 2- 0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Patriots scored six in the second to take an 8-1 lead. KM batted around and Allen had his second triple of the game. Other hits were by Dillon Smith, Brian Brown and Chris Allen. Kings Mountain scored two more in the third go go ahead 10-4. Trey Funderburke singled and Brent Stephens walked, and both later scored on passed balls. KM increased the lead to 11-6 in the fourth as Funderburke collected his second hit of 2006 HONDA the game. ’ Three more runs in the fifth made the score 14-7. Stephens singled and Brown walked, and Austin drove them both home with a sin- gle. Austin later scored on a passed ball. KM's final run came in the sixth as Smith collected his second hit to drive in Funderburke. “We were playing good ball going into spring break and had a two-week layoff,” said Coach Monty Deaton. “We played alright but we're nowhere near where we were when we left. Hopefully we'll get back to playing at that level and finish undefeated in the division.” KMMS tennis team wins two Kings Mountain Middle School defeated Chase 9-0 and 7-2 in tennis Monday. Singles winners for KM were Diana Phanthalack, Emily Gates, Daniel Christenbury, Ryan Webster, Serena Thamlansky, Jennifer Vassey and Erica Hicks.
