Page 8B The Kings Mountain Herald April 27, 2006 SCHOOLS School board takes no action on bids for KMHS project EMILY WEAVER eweaver@kingsmountainherald.com The Cleveland County School Board met Monday “night, April 24th, to discuss possible budget adjustments and bids for the renovation of property on Phifer Road, which could be used for ‘Kings Mountain High School technical classes. The building across the street from the high school could move many classes like Welding, Architecture, and Computer Technology into the new facility allowing 10 or 11 of the 17 classes, now in mobile units, to move into the main building. The bids for renovation and construction were opened on April 20th and are good for 30 days. Architect Roger Holland said that the combination of the lowest bids (for con- struction, plumbing, etc.) came out to about $1.9 mil- lion, a $600,000 increase of the first estimated price. “There is little that is needed to be done to the existing space for utiliza- tion,” Holland told the members. School Board Member Dr. Gene Moore said, “$600,000 is more than we anticipated and that will be a pretty big factor.” “We are closer to the goal now than we were five years ago,” Holland said. Other board members expressed concerns for stu- dents having to cross the street for classes. Holland assured them, “It'll be another area we'll have to monitor. But we will make it safe during class changes.” The school board will rule on the bids and make the final decisions of this long sought-after career technol- ogy building on a later date. The members hope to have a final budget for 2006- 2007 put together by July. The lottery funds appear to be a gamble for the budget. Standing left to right: Juniors Claudia Arc, Brittany Beard, Kristen Long, Oriana Valero, and Senior Krystal Proctor are ready for the big night. KMHS prom Saturday at The Patrick Center EMILY WEAVER eweaver@kingsmountainherald.com The word “prom”, short fomspromenade, carries a different meaning to different peo- ple. To many young ladies it means finding the perfect dress and getting hair, nails and make-up done just so to capture the glory and magic of the evening. Some girls will be escorted by young men in tuxedos, while many others will be in attendance with friends. Some may come in limousines; some in big trucks. But however they arrive, who- ever they are with and whatever their appearance turns out to be, the simple fact remains: young ladies get excited about prom. The Kings Mountain High School's Junior- Senior Prom is scheduled for Saturday, April 29th at the H. Lawrence Patrick Conference Center for 8 pm. “We're going in a 22-passenger white stretch hummer,” said Junior Brittany Beard. She worked with her friend and fellow Junior Kristen Long on the prom committee. The 11th grade class raised $13,586 last year through magazine sales. Holly Melton who has organized the Junior magazine sales over the past six years said that they always say their goal is to sell about $15,000. “This is the closest that any class has come to that goal, since I've been doing this,” Melton said. “We raised all of the money so we picked the theme,” Long said. The theme this year is When asked “The parties am, Venezuela is “Mardi Gras” complete with New Orlean’s decorations, Cajun cuisine, sparkly beads and feathery masks. what the girls were most excited about, Junior Oriana Valero who is an exchange student from Venezuela said, “For me it’s the experience. We don’t have proms, mostly parties and then we go to clubs.” Junior Claudia Arc who is an exchange stu- dent from Bolivia said that schools in her country have events that are like prom. “But they don’t end until 4 am and we can go to clubs,” she said. in Venezuela end around 6 “Valero said. I haven't asked her yet,” she said. All of the girls said that they will probably wear their hair up. But as for the dresses . . . Guys and Dolls opens April 30 at high school Kings Mountain High School's theatre department will perform Guys and Dolls Sunday, April 30 at 3 p.m. and May 1-2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for students and senior citizens, and children five years old and under will be admitted free. All KMHS Renaissance benefits apply. The comedy is based on the story and characters of Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. The musi- cal features an unlikely romance between a pure-at-heat urban missionary girl, Sarah Brown, and a slick Broadway gambler, Sky Masterson. The show’s second romantic story- line involves Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide, who have been engaged for 14 years. Nathan is the organizer of the “oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York:” and Adelaide is the main attraction at the Hot Box Nightclub. This excellent example of a classic musical has been featured on Broadway since November 24, 1950. The leads for this year's musical will be performed by both veteran actors and newcomers to the state. Jordan Paige, -a member of the acclaimed Kings Revue, will be taking on her first role in a musical with the part of Sarah Brown. Sky Masterson is portrayed by senior Josh Gibson. Gibson has been involved in theatre for several years, winning a special award for directing at this year’s North Carolina Theatre Conference Regional Play Festival, and now he is showing his strength and range in this, his first lead ina musical. Tianna Whitaker, who played Hedy LaRue in last year’s musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, will be stepping into her first main lead as the well-known fiancee, Adelaide. Andrew Turner completes the two couples as gambler extraordinaire, Nathan Detroit. Andrew played Scooter Thomas from one of this year’s entries in the North Carolina Theatre Conference Regional Play Festival, Scooter Thomas makes it to the Top of the World, for which he received an Honorable Mention acting award. The richness of this enduring play and the dedication of all students working both in and behind the scenes will fly come through during the performance.
