Summer Reading to begin Mauney Memorial Library kicks off their summer reading program full of games, prizes, learning and excitement for all ages on June 12th. Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales (PCST), for children ages 0-11, will run from June 12th through July 28th. The teen sum- mer reading program, Creature Feature, is for 12 to 18-year-olds and will run during the same days as PCST. The adult summer read- ing program will begin July 1st and end August 11th. Parents can set good examples for children by reading on a regular basis. Readers can register at the library or by log- ging onto http://www.cityofkm.com/library.asp. Reading goals and progress can be updated weekly on the website. Prizes will be award- ed each week and include, but are not limit- ed to: t-shirts, jewelry, free hair cut coupons, free skating and bowling passes, and gift cards to restaurants, Walmart and Claire's. “Our first activity to kick off summer read- ing will be the Bright Star Children’s Theatre performing Aesop Fables. That will be a lot of fun,” said Children’s Librarian Christy Conner. She said that there will be a lot of fun activities for the youth to be involved in this summer but participation is optional. People that are on vacation, can still register in the program and read on their own. “They can post their progress each week on the website and still win prizes without being here,” she said. Upcoming teen activities include Jeopardy, a mystery party and a DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) Day at the library. Any teen who registers for the program will be forgiven of any pre-existing library fines and will have computer access again. If the children who participate in the pro- gram reach their goals, then Conner and Mayor Rick Murphrey will have to kiss a pig at the final celebration. “We will have to put on red lipstick and they'll put the micto- phone up to the pig. Children will hear the pig squealing and we'll give her a kiss,” Conner said. Teens can join the Youth Advisory Council, ‘which meets at the library to talk about books, services, materials and programs for the library. The council will meet at 3 pm on June 22nd, July 13th, July 27th and August 14th. Membership is free and looks great on a resume.
