Page 5B SPORTS Mountaineers to hit Green Wave tonight - GARY STEWART gstewart@kingsmountainherald.com Despite being interrupted by a thunderstorm, Kings Mountain High's football team had its first heavy con- tact practice Monday and head coach Dave Farquharson liked what he saw. The storm chased the Mountaineers off the field shortly after practice began, but they were able to come back later and get in a good hour of contact. “We had a good session of hitting,” he said. “We had a good offensive session and a good. defensive session for the hour that we were out there.” The Mountaineers, though young, are optimistic that they can improve on their 4-7 record of a year ago. Officially, the Mountaineers finished 5-6 after picking up a forfeit by Crest after the regular season had ended. Three returning players and two. potentially strong addi- tions from last year’s JV team anchor the offensive line which will be challenged to play exceptionally well every week to pave the way for some young backs and receivers to gain yardage. Logan Hardin, a 6-3, 285- pound senior center, is start- ing for the third season and is being recruited by numerous Division I universities. Others returning up front are David Clark (6-1, 220) and Luke Proctor (6-2, 220). Stepping up from the JV team are Desman Thompson (6-0, 377) and Sage Luley (6-2, 180). They will be some of the best friends young quarter- * backs Mike Roberts (5-10, 160) and Sharif Burris (5-7, 160) have. Roberts, who is listed on ail the roster as a freshman be is a sophomore as far as footiball eligibility goes, started at defensive back on the varsity last year, and Burris quar ter- backed the JV team to a 9-1 record. : { The only returning player in the backfield is fullback Antwain Ross (5-6, 160), Vwho has éxcellent speed. indy Allen, who played defense most of the time last year, Neil Scott, who played on the IVs, and Derrick Marble, a senior, look good at the receiver ad ; slot positions. “Monday was a little biti dif- ferent in that it was a corjitact day,” Farquharson: said. “They're excited about being able to hit. They had a eed day.” The defense, being coulzdi- nated by former ‘Bast Rutherford head coach| Bill Smothers, also pe ssed Farquharson. “They're looking Sood) ” he said. “They have a lot of {eam speed.” He was impressed {with Thomas James, a 6-2, [276- pounder, and Austun Miller and Brandon Davis, both up from the JV team. He 1nen- tioned that Michael Hegton was impressive at free safety and Joe Chambers at on of the corners. Both are up from the JV team. .
