The Kings Mountain Herald August 17, 2006 Eien os TAT ow An Ashbrook back runs through a huge hole in the Kings Mountain defense in Thursday’s nde! = a scrimmage at the KMHS practice field. MOUNTIES From 1B been bothered with a shoul- der injury, but rising sopho- more Sage Luley played well in his place. “Nothing good ever comes out of an injury, but to have a rising sophomore come in and get those kind of reps and practice time early really helps us,” he said. “He'll have a lot of experience under his belt before game time comes on the 25th. If Larry’s good to go then we have a good quality back- ” up. Fhe Mountaineers also played without the services of one of its top returning defensive players, Kendricus Hart, who is away for National Guard basic train- ing and will join the team later this month. HOPE From 1A down our throat.” Hope has an experienced quarterback in Josh Gilbert, and Putnam hopes between him and Poole Hope's option will work well, and that Brooks can pound the mid- dle to open up the defense. “We're going to run the ball,” Putnam says. “That's what we do. We try to get the ball off tackle. Well run the ball at the same place a lot, just block it differently. We'll come at it in different direc- tions so they really don’t know where the blocking scheme is coming from. We're going to try to pound them with Brooks and then get Chavis free to get out in the open.” Putnam says Gilbert will throw the ball some, espe- cially to 6-8 245-pound tight end Jamien Holland, “just to keep the linebackers honest.” Despite small numbers, Putnam said practice has been going well and every- body is excited about open- ing the season. “Most of the guys know what theyre doing,” he said. “But we do have some new- comers that have never played football. We have some in that category that by the middle of the season should be good.” Surveying a tough sched- ule, Putnam said it’s obvious Hope will be the underdog in many games, but he’s still optimistic. “We're excited,” he says. “If a few things go our way I think we can win Friday. With the numbers we have, if we can put guys on the field and not get anybody hurt well win some games. We have a couple that we're des- tined to lose. I know that going in. In order to win we're going to need help. The ball’s going to have to bounce our way. We're going to have to have some luck but we're going to give it a shot.” Hope Christian Schedule Aug 18 Northside Christian Aug 25 Concord First Assembly Sep1l open Sep 8 at North Lincoln Sep 15 at North Wilkes Sep 22 at Lockhart (S.C.)
