The Kings Mountain Herald September 14, 2006 - SPORTS improvement in ‘06 GARY STEWART gstewart@kingsmountainherald.co With a big roster and some talented play- ers, Kings Mountain Middle School football coach Monty Deaton hopes to see his Patriots contend for the Tri-County Conference championship this fall. The Patriots open their season with non- division games against Shelby and Crest. The veteran coach hopes to use those games to evaluate talent so he can get the right combi- nation on the field for the Eastern Division schedule which begins September 27. Deaton and his assistants greeted over 90 players on the first day of practice. They had to trim the roster down to “a reasonable number,” Deaton said. He is carrying 57 players. Practice has gone well, but he admits the defense appears to be ahead of the offense. “We're looking good at times, but we still are not where we need to be,” he said. “Hopefully, things will get better.” The Patriots will operate out of a Pro I on offense and a 4-3 on defense. Deaton plans to alternate Cameron Harris and Brian Brown at quarterback until one emerges as the leader. The running game will be “by committee,” he says. He has a number of talented players that will share time. “It will depend on what we want to do,” he said, “but we have five tailbacks that can do different things for us. We'll rotate them in.” Trey Edgerton, a returnee, and Jeff Douglas are hard runners so they will be running between the tackles. Douglas weighs 198 pounds. When speed is needed around the perime- ter, Deaton will look to Cedric Thompson and Shelton Watson to carry the ball. Trey Funderburke will start at fullback. Receivers Tim Hines and Schiron Burris also have speed will be counted on to catch a lot of passes and turn them into big gains. Defensively, Deaton says several players have looked good in practice. Collins Pressley, a 7th grader, should be strong at linebacker along with rover Trey Edgerton. Safety Jack Hopper will also be a key on defense. “He's a big kid with good speed,” says Deaton. “He can run things down and he keeps everything in front of him. That's what hurt us last year - letting people make big plays.” Matt Young and Shelton Watson have looked good at the corners. Linemen compet- ing for starting roles include Michael Homesley, John Robbs, Antarious Byers, Dustin Stone, and Jesse Davis. Deaton is being assisted by defensive coor- dinator Tim Gunn, line coach Tim Whitaker, special teams coach Rick Greene, and fifth quarter coach Shane Cole. Fifth quarter games begin at 4:30 and var- sity action starts at 5 p.m. Deaton feels as long as his players improve KM spikers sweep Burns, Chase here on Thursday Kings Mountain High's women's volleyball team complet- ed the first round of Southwestern 2A /3A play Tuesday with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-3 victory over Burns. You never know about how middle school players will respond. The defense is coming along pretty good, they just have to wrap up more. It’s a matter of getting consis- tent and limiting mistakes, and if we do that we have a good chance of winning our divi- sion.” THE SCHEDULE Sept. 13 - Shelby; Sept. 20 - at Crest; Sept. 27 - at Lincolnton; Oct. 4 - E.
