VARIA © > EA pA RETA HI TR The Kings Mountain Herald Kings Mountain's Neil Scott (11) tries to break away from East Gaston tackler after catching a pass in Friday’s game. Jas, Warriors too much for KM Jas (pronounced Jazz) Hopkins could not have been more entertaining had he been playing in New Orleans. The senior East Gaston running back put on a spectacular performance Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium to lead the Warriors to an impressive 41-10 waltz past Kings Mountain's Mountaineers. Kings Mountain appeared ready to com- pete with the Warriors as Tevoris Crosby bounced off a host of East Gaston tacklers and returned the ensuing kickoff to the Warrior 39. A reception by Crosby gave the Mounties a first down at the East 25, but then the drive bogged down and the Mounties had to settle for a 40-yard field goal by Brian Hopkins carried the ball 17 times for 153 Kies. yards and three touchdowns, plus turned a short screen pass from quarterback Stephan McQuage into a 64-yard scoring play. The pass play came on the third play of the game and got the Warriors fired up for their fifth victory in six games. The win broke a two-game losing streak to the Mountaineers, who fell to 1-5. October 5.4 2008 ES Back to The Hole Hope falls 22-21 in Asheville, at City Stadium for final four GARY STEWART gstewart@kingsmountainherald.com Hope Christian will be happy to come back home Friday night after a disappointing loss Friday afternoon at Asheville School. The Thunderbolts host a strong Highland Tech at 7:30 p-m. Friday at City Stadium. The Bolts scored on their first three possessions last week to take a 21-0 lead but Asheville School came back to take advan- tage of numerous penalties to edge the Bolts 22-21 for their first win of the year. Hope Coach Jeff Putnam was too kind to put the blame on the officials, but most if not all of the Hope players and fans felt they were robbed. Three Hope touch- downs were called back and the Bolts were flagged 13 times for 128 yards. “I guess we just shot ourselves in the foot,” said Putnam, whose team fell to 2-4. “We were up 21- 0 in the first quarter and had a chance to blow them away and we just didn’t get it accom- plished.” Arthie Phillips scored on a 31- yard run and Josh Gilbert threw touchdown passes of 15 and 29 "yards to Adam Raye and Ken Gabriel, respectively, to give the Bolts the early lead. Josh Burgess kicked the PAT after each touch- down. But Asheville came back to scored a touchdown and field goal in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-9 at halftime, and Asheville quarterback Danzel Pegram threw two touchdown passes in the second half to pull out the victory. “We did a good job in the first quarter,” Putnam said, “then we just fell apart. We were penal- ized to death.” Gilbert had a good game on offense for the Bolts with 42 yards rushing in nine carries and hitting 9-of-19 passes for 149 yards. Evan Bostic led the rush- ing with 70 yards in nine carries. Arthie Phillips gained 30 yards rushing and caught two passes for 30 yards, Ken Gabriel had two catches for 43 yards and Adam Raye rushed for 23 yards and caught three passes for 39 yards. Jerry Jordan of Kings Mountain, brings a talented 3-3 team to The Hole Friday night. The Rams-are led by one of the top rushers in the area in Darby. “They're going to be a lot more physical,” Putnam said. “They” ve got a great running back in Darby. If we can stop him we've got a shot. If we can’t stop him they'll put up a lot of points.” Patriots come back to beat Lincolnton Shelton Watson scored second half touchdowns on runs of two and five yards to lead Kings Mountain Middle School to a 20- 14 win over Lincolnton Wednesday in Lincolnton. The hosts led 14-6 at halftime as Kings Mountain had trouble early with turnovers and adjust- ing to their passing attack. Lincolnton had only five run- ning plays in the game. Trey Funderburke, who gained 100 yards rushing on 14 carries, scored from 20 yards out in the first half for the Patriots. “We had several opportunities to score in the first half, but had three turnovers,” Coach Monty Deaton said. “In the second half we played better defense in our pass coverage and we ended up keeping them out of the end zone.” With KM trailing 14-12, Watson scored with 1:30 left in the game and then added a two- point conversion to provide the winning margin. Watson ended up with 84 yards in 13 carries. Quarterback Brian Brown hit 3-of-6 passes for 25 yards and ran the ball six times for 21 yards. Cameron Harris and Cedric Thompson each had i 8: yard reception. Li “We saw a lot of Hhproement in that game,” said Deaton, whose team improved to 1-0 in the Tri-County East Division and 1-1 overall. “We finally got. the right combination on defense to make some plays for us. We're starting to jell a little. I think we're going to see some better play the next couple of weeks. ‘The offense should be able to continue to move the ball. We just have to come out from the get-go and keep people from having big plays. If we can stop the big play we'll be in all of the games.” 9:19. 6-111 ois a
