Frustrated. : Car Care Aware My Father says I need to replace my timing belt at 40,000 miles. My boyfriend said not to do it until 100,000 miles. Who's right? Dear Frustrated, there is no magic mileage number when it comes to timing belt replacement. The recommended mileage varies between manufacturers, models and engine size. The recommended mileage for your particular vehicle can be found in your owner’s manual. That’s the little book that came with your car and has probably been lying in your glove box UNREAD since day one. GIRL, take it out and read it. It contains a wealth of information about your vehicle. Pay close attention to the section entitled recommended service schedule. Then you can settle the argument. I'll bet they're both wrong since most late model cars have a recommendation of 60,000 to 65,000 miles. Until next week Maintain Your Vehicle for Safety, Dependability and Value.
