October 26, 2006 The Kings Mountain Herald Hope's Arthie Phillips carries for a 12-yard gain in the first quarter of Friday's game at City Stadium. HOPE From 1B "Nobody laid down. Jamion Holland came up with two big time knocks. It's difficult to throw over him and they threw it toward him twice. The guys really needed another win. They've worked hard." Hope scored on the game's first possession. Phillips and Bostic ran the Thunderbolts to the Pride 10-yard line before a hold- ing call and pressure on quarter- back Gilbert put Hope in a fourth and 30 situation. Luckily, Gilbert connected with Ken Gabriel in the end zone and Burgess’ kick put Hope up 7-0. Late in the first quarter, Hope's Tyler Shores forced a Carolina fumble, but the Thunderbolts punted four plays later. Carolina then moved to mid-field on a 17- yard pass from Zummo to Matthew Kern and a 28-yard pass and run by Simms McElfresh. The Pride's Demarcus Glover ran for the 10- yard touchdown three plays later, but the conversion run failed and Hope led 7-6. The Thunderbolts used much of the second quarter moving from their 35 to the Carolina Pride 31 before the drive stalled. Gilbert, Bostic and Phillips were great for Hope Christian's offense and Gilbert found Gabriel for a 29-yard pass before the Pride defense pressured Gilbert and eventually forced the turnover or downs. : Carolina scored on their next possession as Quinton «Scott aided the Pride's running effort. On third and six, Zummo passed to Jonathan Paquette for the touchdown and a Zummo pass to Derrick Newman on the two- point conversion gave the visi- tors a 14-7 advantage at the break. Phillips recovered a Carolina fumble on the kickoff to start the second half and Hope tied the game three plays later when Gilbert hit Phillips for a 18-yard touchdown pass. Burgess kicked to tie the game at 14-14. The Pride regained control at the 9:17 mark in the fourth chapter when Hope quarterback Josh Gilbert on a keeper. Zummo passed to Sky Lesh for the 23-yard score. The conver- sion attempt failed as the Pride held the 20-14 lead. The Thunderbolts responded with Phillips’ four-yard touch- down to tie and Burgess booted the extra point to give Hope the 21-20 edge. Then Hope's defense claimed the victory. Zummo with 291 yards passing was impressive for Carolina Pride, a Charlotte-based team for home-school and private school students. Gilbert was great for the Thunderbolts with a pair of touchdown passes and Bostic finished with 140 yards on 16 carries. Hope closes out the regular season this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at home against Lockhart, a team the Thunderbolts defeated earli- er this season by a 50-8 margin.
