Upon graduation from Gardner-Webb, Wes lived just inside Rutherford County for nearly a decade, before buying a house in Shelby. By trade, Wes is a printer; a tradesman and a craftsman; an entrepreneur and businessman. After working in the trade for a dozen years, Wes founded Westmoreland Printers in 1999, becoming the 5th generation of his family to own and operate a printing company — a tradition dating to 1887. The company has grown from a single employee to an organization of nine full-time, and one part-time employee, during a time that many consider the worst recession the industry has experienced in the last century. These employees are highly skilled and respected in their craft, and have received over 100 awards in competitive competition for superior craftsmanship since opening in 1999. In January 2005, Wes was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce. Growing up, current events and civic responsibility were always a part of the conversation around the dinner table. At the age of 8, Wes became enthusiastic about Pat Taylors run for the Democrat nomination for Governor, decorating his room like a campaign headquarters. Wes’ first volunteer service to a campaign came in 1976 when he made “Get Out the Vote” phone calls for President Ford. Politics became a hobby for Wes, believing that each person not only can, but is expected to make a difference. Wes also learned a work ethic from his father, as his father learned from his grandfather. Spending time in his father’s veterinary practice and on the family farm, Wes learned not only the expectation of an honest day’s work, but the enjoyment of a job well done. Wes is also a husband and father, and stepfather. His wife, Jennifer, opened her own business, Contours Express, a women's fitness center, in January of 2006. His son Trey, is an 8th grader at Shelby Middle School, and stepdaughter, Kati, is a 9th grader at Shelby High School. After announcing his candidacy for the NC Senate, Wes released a “Contract with the District” which can be seen online at VoteWestmoreland.com. This contract outlines a clear vision for North Carolina that outline Wes' position on many important issues facing the district and the state.
