Lady M Kings Mountain's girls used board strength and a quick tran- sition game to build a 21-5 first quarter lead en route to a 58-40 thrashing of 4A Crest in a non- conference basketball game Monday night at Parker Gym. It was the second straight win for the Lady Mountaineers who are continuing their impressive two-year rebuilding program under Donna DeWitt. Kings Mountain's ~~ boys weren't as fortunate in the night- cap, losing 78-56 to a tall and tal- ented Crest five. Four players scored in double figures for the KM ladies, led by Gerica Vinson and Jordan Doty with 14 points each. Marshia Meeks: scored 11 and Brittany McClain 10. Ashley Washington led Crest with 11. Kings Mountain hit 45 percent of its field goal attempts (19-for- 42). The Lady Mounties also dominated the boards with Vinson grabbing 11 rebounds, McClain eight and Meeks and Hope Phongsa five apiece. Meeks registered six steals, Doty five, McClain four and Brooke Avery and Kelisha Goodson two apiece. The Kings Mountain Herald The KM ladies increased their early lead to 35-13 at halftime. With KM substituting freely, the Chargers were able to win the second half scoring battle 27-22 but never came closer than 17 points. The boys game see-sawed back and forth for most of the first period before the Chargers used their quickness out front and jumping ability on the wings and inside to start breaking the game open. Their full-court pressing defense that resulted in numer- ous steals and their aggressive play inside and in the corners that created a number of rebounds and blocked shots allowed them to go from a 17-14 first quarter lead to a 36-23 half- time advantage and a 48-34 lead going into the fourth quarter. It was the first game of the year for the Chargers and the third straight loss for the Mountaineers. Ray Shawn Roseboro led Crest with 20 points, Josh Spikes had 15, Dion Malachi 13 points and 16 rebounds and Dwayne Maddox 10 points. Daniel Gill scored 21 and Darrick Marable 19 for the Mounties. * McClain grabbed six rebounds. Latin led 19-10 after the first quarter, 35-24 at intermise 37 going into the fourth quarter. David Chadwick led Latin with 31 points. Forestview sweeps Mounties Tuesday Kings Mountain fell to Forestview in a non-conference basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at Parker Gymnasium. The KM girls lost 70-43, drop- ping their record to 2-2. Their other loss was also to Forestview. Marshia Meeks of the Mountaineers was the game's top scorer with 23 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds and three steals. Brittany McClain had eight points, four rebounds and five steals and Jordan Doty con- tributed eight points, six steals and six rebounds. Jessica Capes scored 17 points and Shannon Smith 14 for the Lady jaguars. KM'’s boys experienced a cold shooting hand in the second and dropped their fourth straight game, 66-59. The Jags broke a 11-11 first quarter tie by outscoring KM 16- 8 in the second period to take a 27-19 halftime lead. KM cut the margin to 42-35 going into the fourth quarter but couldn't catch up. Ray Hill led the Jaguars with 24 points. Daniel Gill and Darrick Marable scored 14 each and Sharif Burris added 12 for the Mounties. Wrestlers beat Hunter Huss Kings Mountain High's wrestlers opened their season last week with a 46-36 win over Hunter Huss and a third place finish in the Cory Leatherman Classic at South Point High School. Winners against Hunter Huss Haraszkiewicz, Joe Chambers, Stacy Crawford, Sage Luley, Jiris Toney and freshman Brandon Thornburg. In the South Point dual team tourney, the Mountaineers defeated South Point 51-30, lost to Clover 54-18, bet Burns 63-18, {Steven Montgomery won all five of his matches in the 215- pound division. Winning four matches were Stacy Crawford, Wesley Bell and Thomas James. Winning three matches was Matt Boheler.
