East Principal Jerry Hoyle said that although he is extremely proud of his school to have received that honor, it is lonely at the top. “I'd love to see some other schools also achieve this for their kids,” he said. “We've been very proud of the work our students and our fac- ulty have done. Our staff has really pulled together with the parents and the kids so that we can make sure that everybody learns.” Hoyle said that several things make a difference in their chil- dren's academic growth. “One is just our philosophy that we expect all kids to come to school to learn. We expect them to behave. We also have very high expectations of our kids. We constantly remind our kids that our expectation is for all of them to go to college,” he said. “We also tell our children that we're going to reward them for good behavior and good work. We just have those expectations that kids are going to do well in school and make sure that all of them do.” East Elementary also has an after-school tutoring program, which Hoyle said has helped individual students improve on their weakest subjects. Fourteen teachers volunteer their time after the normal school day to help the children reach their aca- demic best. The school also has an exten- sive reward program, issuing awards to students who demon- strate good behavior, improve- ment, achievement and atten- dance every 9 weeks. Awards, pizza parties, and other small celebrations show each child that their efforts and hard work will not be overlooked, which Hoyle said makes a big differ- ence. East Elementary plans to have a celebration soon to recog- nize the students and staff that made this honor possible. A date has not been set at this time, but Hoyle wants to go ahead invite last year’s fourth grade class (now attending Kings Mountain Intermediate) back to the school for the ceremony.
