CCC goes smoke free
The Cleveland Community College Board of
Trustees voted today to implement a tobacco-free
policy beginning August 1, 2007. The new policy
will eliminate the designated smoking areas and
prohibit the use of smokeless tobacco on the cam-
pus. Tobacco use in college buildings and vehicles
is currently prohibited.
Since August 2006, a college committee has been
researching the possibility of becoming a 100 per-
cent tobacco-free campus. Efforts were funded
with a grant from the North Carolina Health and
Wellness Trust Fund. The committee was made up
of a cross-section of College faculty, staff, and stu-
dents. All members of the College family were
invited to participate.
On-campus surveys evaluating tobacco use and
the desire to adopt a campus-wide tobacco-free
policy supported the policy change.
