This event is one of 42 differ- ent career development events offered to North Carolina FFA members on the state level. “This event requires members to safely operate a tractor through a given course. It pro- vides students the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills while providing real-world application,” says Jason Davis, State FFA Coordinator. Participants were judged on their knowledge and demonstra- tion of safety practices and skills in the operation of a tractor with a two-wheeled tailer. The North Carolina FFA is a youth organization of 16,631 stu- dent members preparing for leadership and careers in the sci- ence, business and technology of agriculture with 214 local chap- ters across the state. From 1A storm we had about a 70 percent (electricity) outage,” he said. The strong winds knocked out multiple traffic lights along King and Gold streets until about 2 pm. Officers with the Kings Mountain Police Department directed traffic in the intersec- tion of King Street and Hwy. 161 Monday until the lights could be restored. Members at the Y exercised by sunlight through the windows and a Gateway Trails luncheon was held in the YMCA gym as they, along with many others, carried on without electricity. But they didn’t have to carry on long. Around 2 pm more than 50 percent of power was restored and by 5 pm 100 percent was back on line, Hendricks said. Although they were quick to restore power in comparison to other damaged areas, he said one thing that slowed them down was the wind. “It was looking very bleak there about 10 am (Monday) morning,” he said: “As soon as we'd get one problem fixed and get ready to throw the power back on, anoth- er limb would fall and we'd have to fix that one.” The wind died down a bit around lunchtime and ‘progress became a little easier. But he said “no one got hurt” ‘and that in itself is suc- cess. Lawrence agrees. She said that it was a good thing she wasn’t leaving for work or that the chil- dren were not out in the yard playing, when the tree fell. It was also a blessing that it did not fall closer to her house or on the vacant house beside her. Her friend, Darrell Austin, came with his chain saw to help remove the tree. He talked about how large the base of the tree was. Both of them standing near the trunk were overshadowed by its circumference. Most of the hard work that the scouts, guardians and Police Explorers for Clean Sweep 2007 had completed on Saturday morning was seemingly gone with the wind Sunday and Monday. Fallen tree limbs, leaves, twigs and other debris not only danced down the side- walks but also down the streets. Mother nature’s protest con- tinues to reverse man’s hard work, first destroying crops with an unseasonal freeze and then messing up roads and yards with occasional sighs of nearly 40 mph. Her last word this time was uttered around 4 am when an electric crew had to come back out to restore power in the Country Creek subdivision after another tree had fallen. As of Tuesday morning, Duke Energy reported 125,394 power outages across North Carolina. Some have been estimated to remain without power until Friday. 209 W. tL Great Prices...Great Service... We've been saying that for years, and so have our patients and their families. But now it’s official. We're proud to announce that the American Nurses Credentialing Center has designated Gaston Memorial Hospital a Magnet™ Hospital. This is one of the highest levels WE THOUGHT OUR NURSES WERE SOME OF THE FINEST IN THE CAROLINAS. TURNS OUT THEY'RE SOME OF THE FINEST IN THE COUNTRY. wer For more information: 704 834 2000 www.CaroMont.org of recognition a hospital can achieve. Nationally, only 4% of hospitals have achieved this distinguished honor. This prestigious national recognition for nursing excellence means so much because nurses are the CC MAGNET RECOGNITION foundation of any hospital. That’s why we've worked so hard to attract a talented nursing staff that is passionate about providing great healthcare. Those nurses have created a rich professional environment for the practice of nursing and the delivery of quality patient care. We're proud of our new Magnet status and even prouder of what it represents; meeting a higher standard for our patients and our nurses. It’s just another example of how some of the most advanced healthcare in Charlotte is actually right here in Gaston County. Gaston Memorial Hospital CaroMont Health
