The Kings Mountain Herald hr April 26, 2007 Childers no-hits Chase, leads plate assault in win over Shelby On the mound or at the plate, Morgan Childers is tough. During the past week, she used her exceptional talent at both places to lead Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team to victories over Chase and Shelby. Childers pitched a no-hitter and struck out 11 of the 15 bat- ters she faced as the Lady Mountaineers blanked Chase 11-0 in five innings Friday. The only Chase batter to reach base was in the bottom of the fifth inning on an error. She was then thrown out try- ing to steal second base. Catcher Courtney Tate went 3-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases, and shortstop Casey Camp slammed two home runs to lead the KM plate attack. Kristin Cogdill went 2-for-3 each had a hit. BM Tuesday night at Lancaster Field, Childers with a triple and three RBIs. Chasiti Falls also had a triple and two RBIs, and Jessica Yarbro and Megan Hoyle went 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Lady Mountaineers to a 15-1 4 1/2-inning victory over the Golden Lions. With a perfect 12-0 conference and 15-2 overall mark, the Mountaineers are closing in on another SWC regular season crown. They were scheduled to host East Rutherford Wednesday and with a win would clinch at least a tie for first place. Childers had plenty of help at the plate Tuesday as Kristin Cogdill smashed a pair of dou- bles and Courtney Tate con- tributed two singles. Childers = started on the mound, pitching two innings and striking out five of the six batters she faced. Her sister, Jordan Childers, pitched the final three innings, holding Shelby to just one hit while walking one and striking out four. gister and have the Sree them re the kin y mountainher- LL KM blanks Shelby to wrap up SWC Kings Mountain High's women's soccer team- wrapped up its second straight Southwestern 2A /3A Conference championship Monday at Shelby with a 2-0 victory. JV action begins at 5 p-m. followed by the varsity at 6:30. With a blustery wind at their backs, Kings Mountain's ladies didn’t take long finding the nets Monday as Katie Cooke slid a pass to the right side of the penalty area to Meagan Reynolds. Reynolds prepared the ball for the ensu- ing blast to the near post just 1:30 into the match to put the Mountaineers on top 1-0. The Mounties would control most of the ball possession and would extend their lead at the 16-minute mark. Ramey kerns played a cross in from Mounties stun 1 Meagan Reynolds scored with 1:23 remaining to give Kings Mountain High's 15th ranked soccer team a 4-3 victory over 10th ranked Asheville Friday night in ‘Asheville in a game KM Coach" Dan Potter said “had all the feel of a playoff match.” Both teams came out with a lot of intensity and had many early scoring opportunities, but nerves won out. At the 12-minute. mark, Asheville got on the scoreboard off a deflected shot in the box by Gibby Grasso just eight yards from the KM goal. KM'’s Ramey Kerns. later tied the score with a left-footed blast from 18 yards out off an assist from Bennett Suber. Lauren Suber made a couple of big saves near the end of the half to keep the score knotted at halftime. “Without a doubt, playing on their artificial turf took a little time for our girls to adjust,” the left flank that was deflect- ed up in the air near the Lions’ goal. A Shelby defender tried to clear the ball with her head but deflected the ball toward the center of the goal. Cooke pounced on the ball and slid a left footer to the back of the post for a 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers would continue to pressure the Lions’ goal throughout the half, but would not penetrate the goal again. Outshot by 11-2, the Lions looked to improve on the sec- ond half possession and increase their scoring opportu- nities. The second half saw the game open up a bit more, but neither team could rip the nets. Heather Stevens came in to replace Lauren Suber in the Mountaineer goal and pre- served the shutout. Kings Mountain will play its final regular season home match next Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Burns. The eight sen- ior members of the KM team will be honored. said Potter. | The second: half was full of fireworks. Bennett Suber beat the Asheville keeper to a per- fectly played diagonal pass from Tayler Deaton just three minutes into the half and scored to put KM up 2-1. Asheville answered the bell just 30 seconds later on a goal by Amber Sherrill. Midway through the half, Reynolds blasted a 35-yard direct kick [that traveled just under the crossbar. Jessamyn Weis, the {Asheville keeper, deflected the shot but Katie Cooke was at the right place at the right time and tapped in the goal to put KM up 3-2. Lauren Suber made several more key saves as the half wore . on and with the help of her sis- ter, Caitlyn, stopper Kelli Bolt and sweeper Jennifer Lingg, held down the potent Asheville attack. With 15 minutes left, Asheville’s Carrie Kubitschek received a yellow caution flag for a serious foul on Tayler Deaton that took her out of the match. But KM made some good adjustments with Brittany McClain in back, Chelsea Champion up front, and Alex Edwards and Megan Loftin in the midfield. Just when it appeared the Mounties had the game in hand, Asheville was awarded a penalty kick and scored with six minutes left to tie the game. But Ashley Witherspoon played a diagonal ball behind the Asheville back line to a streaking Reynolds, who put in the game winner. “This was a fantastic match - one the girls will never forget as they battled a fine Asheville team,” Potter said. Tayler Deaton “heads” the ball back up fleld for Kings Mountain High’s soccer team. JOSEPH BRYMER/ HERALD (i
