Philavong and Henson qualify for Regionals Paul Philavong and Matt Henson of Kings Mountain High ‘School qualified’ for this' week's 3A West Regional tennis tourna- ment by winning the consolation match in last week’s Southwestern 2A /3A Conference tournament at Shelby. The Mountaineer duo defeated John Dew and Jake Dew of Burns 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the Regionals at Charlotte Catholic Friday and Saturday, May 11-12. The Dews defeated Matt Gray and Davis Phanthalack of Kings Mountain in the first round, 6-3, 6-4. Philavong and Henson lost to Michael Putnam and Kyle Upchurch of Burns in the second round, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3. The Burns duo advanced to the Regionals along with Philavong and Henson and the SWC champi- onship team of Alexander Byers and Andrew Parrish of R-S Central. In singles competition, Kings Mountain's two entries lost out in the first round. Josh Vassey fell to Zeke Stephenson of R-S 6- 2, 3-6, 6-3 and Fletcher Webster of KM lost to Wesley Clark of Burns 6-3, 6-3. KM golfers qualify for Regional Tournament Kings Mountain High finished fourth in the final SWC golf match April 30 at Forest City Golf Course, and also completed the season fourth place in the six- team conference. Shelby won the match with a 294 score and also won the SWC championship with an aggregate score of 1,816 for six matches. East Rutherford was second in the match at 301, R-S Central third at 302, KM fourth with 316, Chase fifth with 344 and Burns last with 364. Richard Allen of R-S was medalist with a 70. KM was led by Camden DeVane with 77, fol- lowed by Andy Allen 78, Jared Spicer 80, Jake Allen 81, Hogan Sellers 84 and Reid Smith 85. Andy Allen, Reid Smith, Jake Allen and Hogan Sellers quali- fied for this week’s Western Regional Tournament at Municipal Golf Course in Asheville. Optimists to present Bibles to graduates Kings Mountain Optimist Club has an annual Bible pro- gram where it recognizes any graduating senior football player or cheerleader that are former KM Optimist football players and cheerleaders. This year the presentation will include Kings Mountain High and Hope Christian Academy seniors and will be held Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. at the Patrick Center. Bethlehem Baptist sets golf tourney for missions Bethlehem Baptist Church will host its 7th annual Missions for Christ Golf Tournament May 19 at Pine Grove Golf Club. It is a Captain’s Choice format. He will be inducted by Jerry Adams, who gave him his start in coaching at East Gaston. The Mountaineer football team, which played for the state championship after winning the Western NC championship, will be inducted by its coach, Ron Massey, now head football coach and athletic director at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. The Mountaineer volleyball team will be inducted by its coach, Diana Bridges, who is now principal at Shelby High School. Playoff action begins Tuesday, May 15 with the Mountaineers hosting a team (probably South Point) from the Big South 3A. The game is set for 7 p.m. but will be changed to 6 p.m. if approved by the NCSAAA. The second playoff game is May 18, and the third on May 25. All games would be played at Kings Mountain if the Lady Mountaineers = continue to advance. Tuesday’s game has been des- ignated as Senior Night and all senior players will be recog- nized. The Lady Mountaineers tuned up for the stretch run during the past week with impressive victo- ries over East Gaston and Chase to run their record to 14-0 in the Southwestern 2A/3A Conference and 19-2 overall. Morgan Childers pitched a perfect game and Kristin Cogdill scored the only run of the game on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Kings Mountain a 1-0 victory over a strong East Gaston team Wednesday at Lancaster Field. Tuesday at Chase, Childers pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 as the KM ladies ended the game after five innings on the 10-run rule, 11-0. KM scored four runs in the Thunderbolts beat Hope Christian Academy's baseball team split two games last week, defeating Mt. View Christian of Cowpens, SC 5-2 and losing to Union Academy of + Matthews 23-19. Taylor Brewer (2-3) pitched ¢ a complete game and struck out 11 to beat Mt. View. Hope scored three runs in the third inning on singles by Tyler Shores, Brewer, Chad Mashburn and Taylor Putnam. “Taylor pitched another strong game,” said Coach Richard Shores. “We played very good defense behind him. This was a close, tough game and our kids srohungdn.there andagade plays at the crucial time.” Hope fell behind Union 18-8 after 4 1/2 innings but made things interesting by sending 14 men to the plate and scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jarred Whitlock, Josh Burgess first inning, added a singleton in the second and struck for six in the fourth. Tate continued her torrid hit- ting spree of late with 3-for-3, including two RBIs and one run. She also had a sacrifice. Camp, Childers, Jessica Yarbro, Chasiti Falls and Hayley Hoyle added two hits apiece. Camp had two triples, two RBIs and two runs; Childers had a double and two RBIs; Yarbro had a double and three RBIs; and Falls had an RBI. Cogdill, Barrett and Megan Hoyle each had a single. Mt. View and Craig Huffstetler each had two hits during inning. Whitlock finished the game with 4-for-5, including two balls . off the center field fence. Brewer was 3-for-5 including a 325-foot home run over the left-center . field fence. Shores was 3-for-5 and Burgess 4-for-5. . “Iwas proud of the way our guys fought back from the hole they dug,” Coach Shores said. Players, cheerleaders make All-American Numerous Kings Mountain Optimist Club football players and cheerleaders received scholastic awards recently. Pop Warner requires that all football players and cheerleaders maintain a 2.0 or a minimum of 70% grade point average to par- ticipate. Students exceeding the requirement qualify for scholas- tic recognition. First, participants must qualify within their confer- ence by maintaining an average GPA of 96 or higher for the pre- vious school year. The following 14 KM Optimist participants were chosen for the Greater Gaston All-Americans and were invited to a banquet in Winston Salem on April 1. First team - Emily Dover, Mason Fleischer, Carsyn Bolin, Taylor Blanton. Second team - Zachary Spencer, Wilson Rikard, Phillip Quinn, Travis Oates, DeAngelo Guinn, Samuel Baker, Hannah Chapman, Jada Mauney, Lauren Biggers, Zachary Wilson. The winners are then selected for National All American teams and are invited to an awards banquet at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA May 25-26.
