Mountain Mamas Male ‘beauties’ to raise money for Gateway Trail EMILY WEAVER eweaver@kingsmountainherald.com For the funniest night since “The Womanless Wedding” don’t miss the Mountain Mama Beauty & Talent Show for the Gateway Trails June 9 at 6 p.m. at the Joy Performance Center. Former mayor Scott Neisler will ditch his slacks for a dress along with local Chiropractor Jay Majors to be Mountain Mamas, sparking a fund raising campaign effort for the Gateway Trails. Other Mountain Mamas, whose true char- acter identities will be kept secret until all of the ballots are in, are scheduled to be played by Andy Neisler, Jim Champion, Dan Potter, Jerry Ledford, and Tom Bennett. Dan Treharne will be the director and Nelson Connor the master of ceremony for this mountain of laughs. The Gateway Trails, a non-profit organiza- tion, is hosting the hilarious event to raise money, interest and awareness in a biking, hiking, running, and walking trail that may one day connect Kings Mountain to its namesake at the National Military Park. The Mamas gathered at different locations in April to discuss the ideas for their charac- ters. Some of them were pretty excited and happy to don a wig and a dress - for the cause of course. “It’s going to be sort of a country hoedown with backwoods characters that relate to nature,” said Shirley Brutko. © Hallie Connor described the characters as “mountain folks that live on or ‘near the! trails:” ‘But these Mountain Mamas haves! some crazy tricks up their sleeves and per- haps a baseball bat handy to keep the moun- tain men away. Tickets at $50 apiece for this once in a life- time hilarious fund raiser are going fast. To get tickets, call Shirley Brutko at 704-739- 4755 or drop by the Kings Mountain Cleveland County Chamber Office on Battleground Avenue or at the Kings Mountain Family YMCA. Tables will be set up inside and outside in the lot beside the theatre for dining. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. The evening will be complete with door prizes, drinks, music and entertainment. Brutko, Ashley Harris and David Ozmore are in charge of the publicity. [yma Atwell is in charge of ticket sales. Kathy and George Culver will supply the non-spirited bever- ages and Larry Hamrick, Jr. will supply the other drinks. Handling the backstage scene, will be Erin Broadbent, Linda Falls and Larry Hyde. Gina Ayscue and Melanie Ballard will assist the Mountain Mamas and Ayscue will also be in charge of door prizes with Dennis Patterson. Barbara and. Clenon Tackett will be in charge of light and sound, Mary Wade Smith in charge of programs. Greg Williams will be leading the judges, who will be “dressed appropriately.” Pre-show entertainment includes: the banjo tunes of Dustin Bowens, a serenade by Heather Wilson and a skit by Craig Mayes. Brutko and Connor have been working tirelessly on the logistics of the event since January. “We are hoping to raise at least $10,000,” Brutko said, adding that more would be better. All of the money raised will go towards the Gateway Trails, which is anticipated to infuse new life, health and tourism into the Kings Mountain area. On the night of the show, the lobby of the Joy Theatre will showcase information on the trails. “We're really getting ready to take off with the trails,” Brutko said, adding ‘that she thinks the Mountain Mama Beauty & Talent Show will be the big kick-off they need, with laughter and hopefully money guaranteed.
