The Carolina Rattlers 10U AA team recently placed! runner-up in the Summer Slugfest USSSA Baseball
Toumament In Simpsonville, SC. The team Is managed by Marcus Orders, Earl Lainhart, and Tom
Stevens. Players Include Jacob Lainhart, Logan Stevens, Jacob Nixon, Austin Nixon, Landon Bolin,
Timmy Baucom, Drew Green, Austin Enloe, Tanner Orders and Jacob Sneed.

today.
Leigh, who assisted Lloyd the
past two years at East Gaston,
will help defensive coordinator
Bill Smothers install KM’s new
defensive scheme. He will con-
tinue to teach at East Gaston
until the end of the year, when
he plans to retire from teaching.
Leigh was an assistant coach at
KMHS for several years under
Denny Hicks and Ron Massey.
He also served tenures as head
coach of the girls softball and
basketball teams, as well as base-
ball.
Leigh is a former baseball
standout at KMHS and Gardner-
Webb University. He began his
coaching career in South
Carolina. He served as a football
assistant coach and head coach
at Bessemer City, and as well as
an assistant at Canton Pisgah
before coming to KMHS in 1986.
While at Canton, where Leigh
‘was defensive coordinator in
football, he turned out numerous
championship softball teams,
including one that played for the
state 2A championship.
YMCA swimming pool open
The swimming pool at the
Kings Mountain Family YMCA
is now open daily. Hours are
Monday-Friday: 12 p.m.-2 p.m.

Men’s soccer summer
workouts to begin
Kings Mountain High men’s
soccer summer workouts are
every Tuesday and Thursday
night from 7-9 p.m. at the Kings
Mountain Middle school field.
‘Anyone interested in playing
should attend these workouts.
Official tryouts will be held
the: week of August 8-11.
Tryouts will be held at Davidson
Park from 7-8:30 p.m. on the 8th,
9th and 10th. The team will
leave: KMHS early Saturday
morning, August 11, for the
Jamboree in Asheville. All play-
ers will need to attend this
Jamboree.

As a new feature this year,
starting, on Thursday, June 21,
in gS. Mp untain Family

7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. on Thursday
evenings for family swim time.
During this time, only families
will be allowed into the swim-
ming pool. An adult must
accompany anyone under the
age of 18. The family swim time
will be free for members and $2
per person for non-members.
Registration is underway for
swim lessons for ages 6 months
and up. Prices are $15 for YMCA
members, $31 for non-members
residing within the city limits of
Kings Mountain, and $45 for
non-residents. Register by June
28 for classes to be held on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings
July 2-July 19, or register by July,
19 for classes to be held Monday
and Wednesday mornings or
Tuesday and Thursday evenings
July 23-August 9.
The pool is also available for
party rentals. For prices and
availability call the YMCA at
704-739-9631.
On July 4th the swimming
pool will be open from 6:30 p.m.-
8:30 p.m. Pizza, chips, drinks, ice
cream and candy concessions
will be sold during this time. All
guests are required to leave the
pool prior to the start of fire-
works for safety reasons.

Barksdale Air Force Base in
Shreveport,
La.
He was in
the United
States Marine
Corp for 8
years and has
served the
United States
Air Force for

second tour.
He is the son and stepson of

Mitchell Cavenaugh
completes USAF
training at Lackland
Air Force Airman Mitchell B.
Cavenaugh has graduated from
basic
military training at
Lackland Air
Force Base,
San Antonio,
Texas.
During the
six weeks of
training, the
airman stud-
ied’ the Air
Force mis-
sion, organi-
zation, and
military cus-
toms and courtesies; performed
drill and ceremony marches,
and received physical training,
rifle marksmanship, field train-
ing exercises, and special train-
ing in human relations.
In addition, airmen who com-
plete basic training earn credits
toward an associate degree
through the Community
College of the Air Force.
He is the son of Marian

Mountain Hospital.

reported being assaulted at a
home on Wilson Terrace, saying
he was cut by a razor blade.
A resident of Loblolly Ln.
reported a break-in and larceny
of a HD TV valued at $12,000,
watch valued at $50, CD player
valued at $150, DVD player val-
ued at $50 and socks valued at
$20. There was damage to a door
and frame.
City of Kings Mountain
reported that someone knocked
over a fire hydrant on N.
Piedmont Ave., causing $1,200
damage.

valued at approximately $149.
A resident of Blanton St.
reported a lost or stolen cell
phone valued at $120.
WRECKS
A tractor-trailer driven by
Jammie Miller of Bluefield, WV
was getting onto Interstate 85
from Highway 74 East and ran
off the road. He lost control of
the vehicle and it overturned,
causing $80,000 damage. There
were no injuries.
A vehicle driven by Vicente
Vargas of Gastonia was traveling
east on Waco Rd. and ran off the
right side of the road, over-cor-
rected and ran off the left side of
the road, over-corrected and ran
off the right side again and over-
turned., Damage was $5,000.
There were no injuries. Vargas
was charged with no operator’s
license.
Sign card for fallen
firemen at KMFD
In honor of the nine fallen fire-
fighters in Charleston, SC, Kings
Mountain Fire Department will
have a large card for the public
to sign in the lobby of City Hall,
beginning Monday. The card
will be sent to the Charleston
Fire Department.
