Sarah Barbara Hambright
Rhyne
Graham — Mrs. Sarah Barbara
Hambright Rhyne, 94, of
Graham died at Twin Lakes
Health Care on Thursday, July 5,
2007 at 8:12 p.m.
Mrs. Rhyne was born
November 2, 1912 in Kings
Mountain, NC. She was the last
surviving child of the late
Margaret Nettie Patterson
Hambright and Gilbert Dixon
Hambright. She was preceded in
death by three sisters, Anne
Hambright Jackson, . Corinne
Hambright Stowe, and Mary
Helen Hambright Patrick and
one brother, Claude Hambright.
Mrs. Rhyne was the wife of the
late Myron Alexander Rhyne,
textile executive and former
mayor of the City of Graham.
She is survived by one daughter,
Janet Rhyne Andrews, son-in-
law, Dennis ‘G. Andrews and
three grandsons.
Mrs. Rhyne was a graduate of
Brenau College in Gainsville,
Georgia with a degree in speech
and dramatic arts. She moved to
Graham with her husband in
1946 and together they served
their adopted community for the
next 50 years.
Sarah Rhyne was the essence
of preservation, beautification,
and the arts in Alamance County.
She was often called the “First
Lady of Graham” and the
“Mother of the Arts in Alamance
County”
She was involved in numerous
activities in the community
including the Parent Teacher
Association, United Way, and
Girl “Scouts. © She served as
President of the Alamance
County Girl Scout: Council,
1959-1961; served on the Board
of Directors of the Alamance
County Health Department;
President of Community Council
for two terms 1966-67, 1967-68;
Chairman, Alamance County
Committee for Better Schools;
Area Chairman, N.C. Alliance of
Arts Education. She founded the
Candy Striper = Volunteer
Program at Memorial Hospital of
Alamance and was the director
of thatprogram for four and ene
half years, giving 6,000.volunteer:
hours in service to the hospital
and its patients. She has been
instrumental in founding associ-
ations, councils and commis-
sions which enrich our cultural
lives today.
In the 1970’s, Mrs. Rhyne
served on the Governor's
Beautification Commission and
began a campaign in March 1970
to clean up Alamance County.
Her personal efforts to beautify
Graham resulted in the organiza-
tion of the Graham Appearance
Commission of which she served
as Chairman for well over a
decade. She also served as
Chairman of the Graham Tree
Board founded in 1980 and
through her diligence; Graham
was named a Tree City USA. In
1977, due to the efforts of Sarah
Rhyne, the Alamance County
Historic Properties Commission
was formed. She also sat on the
original governing board of the
Alamance County Historical
Museum and the Graham
Historic Properties Commission.
Sarah Rhyne was a charter
member and served on the first
Board of Directors of the
Alamance County Arts Council,
one of the first arts councils in
the state. She served as President
in 1977, 1978, and 1979 and
chaired the Gallery Exhibition
Committee for many years. She
was the creator and director of
Graham's acclaimed street festi-
val, Arts ‘Round the Square, an
annual event for 25 years. Her
name is linked with the founding
of the Gallery Players, the
Alamance Children’s Theater,
Alamance Chorale, Alamance
Jazz Band and the Civic Dance
Company.
Mrs. Rhyne was instrumental
in saving some of the most
important architectural and his-
torical landmarks in Alamance
County and in preserving
Alamance County's rich history
of mills and houses related to
textile magnate E.M. Holt and
his descendants. In 1992, Mrs.
Rhyne almost single-handedly
convinced NationsBank (now
Bank of America) executives not
to demolish Elmhurst, a signifi-
cant 1898 Second Empire house
belonging to the daughter of
E.M. Holt. The house was adapt-
ed for re-use and in 1994,
NationsBank won the L. Vincent
Lowe Award from Preservation
North Carolina for this project.
Sarah Rhyne had the vision 40
years ago that the Glencoe Mill
and Village, developed in 1880-
1882 by two sons of E. M. Holt,
was an extraordinary place
which should be preserved. Half
ownership of the mill and village
had come to Sarah and Myron
Rhyne in exchange for manage-
ment services. Under their influ-
ence, the mill and the houses
were kept intact until 1995 when
their portion of the property was
donated to Preservation North
Carolina. Today Mrs. Rhyne’s
preservation vision for the coun-
ty --- a restored mill village
museum site — is a reality.
Partnering with many others
in the community, Mrs. Rhyne
was also able to help save the
Captain James White House,
built in 1873 by E. M. Holt as a
gift for his daughter Emma. The
Captain James and Emma Holt
White House is now the home of
the Alamance County Arts
Council. Mrs. Rhyne and her sis-
ter Mary Helen Hambright
Patrick gave generously to the
restoration of the Captain White
House and the main exhibition
galleries are named the “Sister
Galleries” in their honor.
She has won numerous awards
over the years for her efforts
including the Friends of the Arts
Award sponsored by the North
Carolina Association of Arts
Educators; Alamance County's
Woman of the Year; The Order of
swthe Long Leaf Pine presented by
Governor Robert Scott; the first
C. Fletcher Moore Leadership in
the Arts Award by Elon
University and the Alamance
County Arts Council;
Outstanding Volunteer Service
Award by United Way; the
Brenau College Community
Service Award and the Gertrude
S. Carraway Award of Merit pre-
sented in 1997 by Preservation
North Carolina. She was hon-
ored by the citizens of Graham in
October 1971 when the city cele-
brated Sarah Rhyne Day and by
the citizens of Alamance County
when the county’s “Living
Christmas Tree” was dedicated
in her honor. Two scholarships
are presented each year in
Alamance County in honor of
Sarah Rhyne: the Alamance
County Arts Council's Sarah H.
Rhyne Scholarship in the
Performing Arts and Alamance
Community College's Sarah
Rhyne Art Endowment.
Mrs. Rhyne was a former
member of Macedonia Lutheran
Church and a current member of
Graham Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service was con-
ducted at the Graham
Presbyterian Church at 11:00
AM, on Tuesday, July 10, with
Rev. Steve Braswell officiating. A
private burial service was held at

July 8, at 7:30 PM.
Following the memorial serv-
ice, the family receives friends at
a reception hosted by the
Alamance County Arts Council,
honoring the life and contribu-
tions of Sarah Rhyne, at the
Captain James and Emma Holt
White House, 213 S. Main St.,
Graham.
It was her wish, that in lieu of
The Kings Mountain Herald
flowers, donations be made to
the Sarah Rhyne Fund for the
Preservation of the Captain
James and Emma Holt White
House, in care of the Alamance
County Arts Council, 213 S. Main
