KMHS Computer students build experience for future at BBG EMILY WEAVER eweaver@kingsmountainherald.com _ Kings Mountain High School Computer Engineering Technology teacher Alfred Ash .not only gives his students the gift of instruction, he also offers them invaluable experience. Hundreds of college graduates throughout the state begin the long process of job hunting after they receive their, diplomas. The process seems, to be made even longer as most of them realize, ithe degree alone is not their meal ticket. They need experience. + Unfortunately experience is ‘often unattainable until after a diploma, leaving many strug- gling to catch a break. Ash is “helping to eliminate that future struggle. During the school day he teaches his students the nec- essary computer curriculum. But after school and during the sum- mer, he gives some of them hands-on experience in his shop, BBG (Blessed By God) Computer Sales & Services. Ash has been teaching for the past 23 years, the last six of which have been focused on the “wave of the future,” computers. As far as running BBG, he said ithe business takes care of itself, financially. But his main motiva- stor of opening up the shop six years ago was not really for the “almighty dollar.” “I really did it for the kids,” he said. “A lot of _the times you have kids that “want to go into this field but “when they go to apply for a job, “they want to know if they've got “any experience. So I put some of “the kids that are interested and DANIEL MCABEE that show an aptitude for it and give them a chance to get that experience.” Right now, he employs three students. One graduated from KMHS a year ago and works part-time at the shop. Another one, Daniel McAbee, just gradu- ated and works about 30 hours a week with Ash. The third one, Jerry Lowery, 17, is going to be a senior at KMHS in August and works about 35 hours a week. “He's a good teacher. He'll show you what you need to know,” Lowery said. He’s had 10 other students come through his shop, some of which have gone into the field of computers. His son and former student, Matthew, is now work- ing with Information Systems and Operations Management for UNC-Greensboro. Will Denton, another apprentice, is working in - here, -the IT department at Gaston College. Another former student has opened up his own shop in Kings Mountain bringing a little competition to Ash, who wel- comes it proudly. Lowery also said that he wants to have his own shop one day. Working at BBG, the students have a chance to diagnose, repair, build new computers and deal, with customers. But that’s not all they do. They also cut the grass, carry out trash, sweep and whatever else is needed to main- tain operations. It’s not just expe- rience, it’s also about responsi- bility. McAbee finished up his Computer Engineering Technology II class last semester, making a 90 on his final exam - the highest grade on finals in Ash's class last semester. “That is a tough test,” Ash said. “I think him having the experience and the exposure to different things made a difference.” McAbee will be going to college in the Fall to study computer information systems. He'll also be running the shop during school hours. Ash lives in his hometown of Kings Mountain with his wife, Connie, and their adopted daughter, Kayla, 11. They also have three other children who are now grown Matthew, Anthony and Niki. BBG repairs, rebuilds, refurbishes, builds and . sells made-to-specification com- puter systems Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Ash hopes to expand the business in the future to be able to employ 10-15 students. ‘Gaston College.
