August 16, 2007 The Kings Mountain Herald RELIGION Mary’s Grove, Laboratory hear humorist Bill Melton Members and friends of Mary's Grove United Methodist Church and Laboratory United Methodist Church were shaking in their seats last Sunday night. Their faces were stained with tears of laughter as their guest speaker, Bill Melton, shared his stories from "high grass manor." This "good ol' boy" painted vivid and hilarious events from his early days of being a minis- ter. There was no stopping Mr. Melton as he took the audience from the scene of his wedding to his honeymoon. Mr. Melton con- tinued on with one yarn after another as he gave his plan of parenthood. It was hard to tell where one smile stopped and another one started. It was hard to figure out at which tale every- one was really laughing. This Southern humorist and writer just kept the lines coming! Even the walls of the Fellowship Building of Mary's Grove United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain seemed to feel the love, humor and laughter as it radiated throughout the night. Melton writes an award win- ning self-syndicated newspaper CHURCH BRIEFS column that appears in a number of newspapers throughout North Carolina. His book, "Living in a Bottled Water World - A Good OI' Boy Speaks His Mind" is a collection of some 70 columns from his first two years as a columnist. Melton speaks to audiences throughout North and South Carolina. Melton was born and raised in the Piedmont of North Carolina and grew up in Gaston County. He graduated from East Gaston High School in 1984 and from Belmont Abbey College with a B.A. in History in 1988. He has served the Gaston County Police Department as a patrolman, narcotics investiga- tor, SWAT team member, patrol sergeant, educational service ser- geant, patrol district captain, and captain of the Special Investigations Section. He is cur- rently the commander of the Department's Support Service Bynum Chapel to host Back to School Bash Bynum Chapel Christian Education Department will sponsor a Back To School Bash Saturday, Aug. 18 from 6-11 p.m. at the Bynum Chapel Family Life Center, North Cansler/Ellis St., Kings Mountain. There will be Bible trivia, gospel chairs, artistic impres- sions, music and dance, Bible bingo, food, and sessions on back to school dress, behavior and health issues. He has served as mas- ter of ceremonies for festivals and has served as the keynote speaker for trade associations as well as at county fairs.
