Since all of the funds raised in a community, stay in the commu- nity, the campaign efforts gave dozens of KM people, who oth- erwise could not have afforded it, membership to the YMCA. Some of the people helped by the fund raising efforts last year will be at the kick-off to share their testimonials. : Fund raising efforts help chil- dren, families, adults and seniors facing financial difficulty to achieve better health and fitness at the Cleveland County YMCAs. According to the Y, “The We Build People scholarship program helps us reach a greater number of people in order to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The YMCA movement is particularly relevant in our county due to low wages, major job losses and plant closings and various other economic factors.” Every penny raised through the We Build People campaign goes directly to providing “financial assistance for mem- bership and/or youth programs by awarding full and partial scholarships to families and indi- viduals in need.” According to the Cleveland County YMCA, since the effort began, funds raised have: e “Enabled ‘at risk’ children to play sports in a safe, supervised setting e “Provided a family that had suffered through Hurricane Katrina with membership privi- leges and after school care at no charge * “Made it possible for single, working parents to send their children to our after school pro- gram in a caring, Christian envi- ronment * “Are giving assistance to a family of abandoned children.” For more information about the We Build People program or to contribute to the cause, contact the KM Family YMCA at 704- 739-9631 or visit them online at clevecoymeca.org/kings_moun- tain.
