The Kings Mountain Herald September 13, 2007 OBITUARIES CHARLES THOMAS MCSWEENEY KINGS MOUNTAIN - Charles Thomas “Charlie” McSweeney, 60, died Sunday, September 2, 2007 at Wendover Hospice. A native of Jamaica, Long Island, NY, he was the son of Doris Cooper McSweeney and the late Terence William McSweeney. He was a graduate of John E Kennedy High School in Willingboro, NJ and was a US Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief and rescued downed pilots. He was a volunteer fireman for 13 years and owned E-Z Auto Service in Willingboro. He was an ASE certified mechanic and managed Guaranteed Tune-Up and the Speedee Oil Change on South Blvd. in Charlotte. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, Leslie Jean Hanson McSweeney of Kings Mountain; sons Christopher McSweeney of Kings Mountain, Charles T. McSweeney Jr. of Medford, NF, and Chad McSweeney of Williamstown, NH; daughter Julie Hartnett of Charlotte; brothers and sisters-in-law, Terence Jr. and Virginia McSweeney of Sicklerville, NJ, Kevin and Patricia McSweeney of Dover, DE, Sean and Barbara McSweeney of Palmyra, NJ; sis- ter and brother-in-law, Eileen and Harry Bruckno of Staunton, Va; grandchildren Michael McSweeney and Brianna McSweeney of Williamstown, NJ; mother-in-law Mary Hanson of Gastonia; sister-in-law and husband, Cherry and Al Rappoli of Rocky River, OH; close friends Alex and Lark Borgemeister, Fred and Jill Arko, Betty Arko and K.O Keller; cousins Randy and Pat Foster; the neighbors of Kings Crest; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 7 p-m. in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. Interment was in Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, NJ. MARGIE PUTNAM TODD KINGS MOUNTAIN - Margie Putnam Todd, 78, of White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain, died Friday, September 7, 2007 at Hospice/Wendover, Shelby. Born in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Lane Putnam and Stella Fincannon Putnam. She was also pre- ceded in death by her husbands, James M. Todd and Emery Murry, son Harold Dean Murry, sisters Joyce Homesley and Frances Baker, and brothers Glenn Putnam and Lawrence Putnam. She was retired from Western Auto Distribution Center, Gastonia. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She is survived by her broth- ers, Ronnie Putnam and Herman Putnam, both of Bessemer City; sister Nelline Hovis of Kings Mountain; and nieces and nephews. : The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Eugene Land and Jeff Glenn at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10, 2007 at Eastside Baptist Church. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. WILLIAM LEROY “BOB” HEAD GAFENEY, SC - William Leroy “Bob” Head, 67, 125 Andrew Drive, Grover, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at his resi- dence. He was the son of the late William Eugene Head and the late Betty Holden Head. He was also predeceased by his son, Sam Collins, and his companion, Helen Collins. He was employed in the tex- tile industry and was a member of Penley’s Chapel Church. He is survived by his daugh- ters, Betty Ramey of the home and Kay McSwain of Earl; son William Timothy Head of North Carolina; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; sis- ters Jean Merck. of Cherryville and Virginia Thompson of Oklahoma; and daughter-in-law Teresa Collins. KINGS MOUNTAIN - John Oscar Corbett Jr., 94, resident of Summit Place, died September 9, 2007 at Cleveland Regional Medical Centier, Shelby. He was born October 1, 1912 in Saxapahaw, NC. He was the son of the late John O. Corbett and Margaret Albright. He was a graduate of Shelby High School, Mars Hill College and Clemson University. He served with the Office of Defense Transportation, Asheville, from 1932-1934. He was the owner of Service Motor Sales, Marshall, NC from 1932-1974 and President of the French Broad Electric Cooperative, Marshall, for 21 years. He was a Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Mars Hill College and received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from Mars Hill College in 2001. He was a choir director and Deacon of Marshall Baptist Church, Marshall. He was a Mason - 3rd Degree, a Shriner, President of the Marshall Civitan Club, and President of the Marshall Lions Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Asheville. Mr. Corbett enjoyed ballroom danc- ing with his wife, Lillian, and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Lillian Whitehurst Corbett of Kings Mountain; son John A. Corbett and wife Sue of Belmont; daughter Margaret C. Westmoreland and husband Ted of Shelby; six grandchildren, Suzanne Mills and husband Keith of Gastonia, Connie Corbett of Waynesville, Michelle Sanford of Charlotte, Kathi Hart and husband Kevin. of Greenville, SC, Carl Burgardt and wife Sara of Durham, and Jacqueline Connell and husband Jennings of Shelby; nine great- grandchildren, Cory, Taylor, Addison, Maggie, Nichole, Jennifer, Jonathan, Georgianna, and Kayah; and seven nieces and nephews. A graveside service was con- ducted by the Rev. Buddy Freeman on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the grave site of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Whitehurst, Bowman Rector Cemetery, Marshall, NC. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Gail Coulter on Thursday, September 13,2007 at 1 p.m. at the grave site of Mr. and Mrs. John O. Corbett, Sunset Cemetery, Shelby. He was born in Cleveland County. He was the son of the late Russell Ellis Jr. He served in the United States Navy. He was an electrician. He is survived by his sons, Sgt. Russell T. Ellis and wife Min Jung of Wahiawa, HI, Michael Pruitt of Kings Mountain and Joshua Pruitt of Kings Mountain; daughters Melissa Ellis of Belmont and Jenna Pruitt of Belmont; mother Diane Stengele Ellis of Gastonia; and sisters Deborah Mayberry of Gastonia and Laura Morrow of Kings Mountain. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Nelson Hope at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at True Gospel Holiness Church. Interment was in Westview Gardens, Bessemer City. JUANITA TILLERY KOHN SHELBY - Juanita Tillery Kohn, 76, 122 Stony Ranch Road, died August 29, 2007 at White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain. She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Cora Florence Whitford Tillery and widow of the late William Henry Kohn. She was also preceded in death by granddaughter Candy Nobles, sisters Virgil Glover and Mildred Taylor, and brother Bill Tillery. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her son, John William Kohn of Shelby; daughter Juanita Louise Beebe and husband James of Shelby; brother Woodrow Tillery of Courtland, Ohio; grandchild Ted Nobles; and great-grandchildren Trenton Lee Nobles, McKinnsey Chambers, James Story, David Story and Joshua Dickinson.
