The Kings Mountain Herald October 25, B YOUR RIGHT TO Say It Some needs, solutions for Kings Mountain To the editor: Below are needs of the community and possible solutions: For our senior citizens: Need - We need more transportation. There are no taxis or buses in Kings Mountain. Solution - We could get an old bus from the school system and utilize it as a KM community bus. Old city cars that are no longer in use can be refurbished for taxi transportation. For our kids: Need - The kids need something to do; something in town that they can get involved in. Many of them can’t travel to Shelby or Gastonia. They need some activi- ties here in Kings Mountain. Solution - If the people of KM would pull together (like they did when the playground at the Jake Early Sports Complex was built) and pool their resources, we could buy one of those old plants/community center. Could possibly use old police cars for secu- rity. Put a movie theater in the old weight building downtown. Give the residents of KM a chance to say we tried. We need to do something for our kids! For the homeless: Need - There are places in town that feed the homeless, but there are no places that offer shelter to the homeless. Solution - Buy a foreclosed house and transform that into a shelter for the home- less. Stop shutting people out. Get involved. This is our town. This is our home. Mary McKinney Gordon right man for KM council To the editor: It is with great pleasure and pride that I offer this letter of endorsement to a long time friend, Rodney Gordon. I have had the privilege to know Rodney for nearly fifteen years, as he has helped me with my HVAC needs over the years, as well as his wonder- ful wife, Vickie who works for me in my medical practice. You cannot find two better individuals than Rodney and Vickie Gordon. As a local physician and a four term coun- cilman in Gastonia, I keep my eyes and ears open, and over the past two years I have heard nothing but great things about the work Rodney is doing on the Kings Mountain City Council. Foremost, Rodney represents honesty and integrity, something highly desired by all citizens who want good representation and leadership for their community. He cares dearly about his city and you can tell by his actions, he is all about doing the right things and doing things right! Give Rodney a chance to continue his service on the city council, as he has a lot to offer and his wisdom and judgement will only bring progress and growth to your fine city. oS him the best of luck, although he doesn't truly need it for he is the right man for the job! Sincerely, Dr. David R. Kirlin Gaston Foot & Ankle Associates, PA City Councilman, Gastonia. Scoggins would make good board member To the editor: I hope every voter in Cleveland County will give serious thought as for whom they vote to serve on the school board. This is a position that requires fiscally sound. think- ing and experience. One candidate I have known for over a quarter century would make an excellent school board member. He is Bob Scoggins who taught school for many years until ‘ retiring and then started a successful busi- ness of his own. His excellent character, interest in our chil- dren’s future, experience in the educational system and operating a business seems to be a great combination to make Bob Scoggins deserving of your vote for Cleveland County School Board. Over the years, I've collected stories and anecdotes about young peo- ple, and some of them are funny. The following is a smn 115€ of actual answers to sixth grade history tests sent to me by a school teacher in California. Enjoy a laugh or two. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea where he made unleavened bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the 10 com- mandments. He died before he ever reached Canada. Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rub- bing two cats backwards and declared, “a horse divided against itself cannot stand.” Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead. Soon the Constitution of the United States was adopted to secure domestic hostility. Under the Constitution the people enjoyed the right to keep bare arms. : Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines. In the Olympic Games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits and threw the java. Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: “Tee hee, Brutus.” 3 Meanwhile in Europe, the enlighten- ment was a reasonable time. Voltaire Jim Heffner Guest Column invented electricity and also wrote a book called Candy. Gravity was invent- ed by Isaac Walton. It is chiefly notice- able in the autumn when the apples are falling off the trees. The French Revolution was accom- plished before it happened and cata- pulted into Napoleon. Napoleon want- ed an heir to inherit his power. But since Josephine was a baroness, she couldn’t have any children. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline. Queen Elizabeth was the “Virgin Queen.” As a queen she was a success. When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted “hurrah.” Nero was a cruel tyranny who would torture his subjects by playing the fid- dle to them. Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonized by Bernard Shaw. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth. Actually Homer was not written by Homer but by another man by that name. Christopher Columbus was a great navigator who discovered America while cursing about the Atlantic. His ships were called the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Fe. This last one is a classic. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circula- tion of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. And Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100-foot clipper. I wonder if Miss Teen South Carolina took this test. Jim Heffner is a writer for the Belmont Banner/Mount Holly News.
