November 1, 2007 The Kings Mountain Herald Page 13 LOCAL NEWS Handel’s Messiah set December 20 at First Baptist The Charlotte Symphony and the Oratorio Singers will pres- ent Handel's Messiah Thursday, December 20 at First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. The concert is underwritten by First National Bank. The Oratorio Singers include several people with local con- nections. Andy Neisler and Jerry Ledford of Kings Mountain, as well as Kings Mountain native Rita Phifer, are members of the group. Garry Summer is from Cherryville and Sarah and Dwayne Fink are from Gastonia, as are Mary Katherine Monteith, and Troy Robertson. The Symphony and Oratorio perform this concert annually in Charlotte. This year’s Charlotte concert will be on Wednesday, Dec. 19 to a sold out Blumenthal Performing Arts Center audi- ence. “It’s a real treat to be able to perform this at such a high level” commented Andy Neisler. “The Symphony, the Oratorio and especially the soloists are such great musi- cians. And Dr. Scott Jarrett, our conductor, is phenomenal.” The four soloists are brought in from around the country and all have impressive national and international resumes, hav- ing sung in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Curbside leaf pickup to begin The City of Kings Mountain will be picking up leaves and grass clippings at curbside from November 5-February 15. Leaves and clippings will be picked up once a week. They may be. raked behind the curb but not into the street. They may be raked beside the road where there is no curb. Vet week trash pick-up altered The City of Kings Mountain trash pick-up schedule for Veteran's Day week (Nov. 12-16) will be delayed by one day. Monday's trash will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, Wednesday's on Thursday, and Thursday's on Friday. Large roadside items which are usually picked up on Fridays will be picked up the following Friday or as time allows through the week. It’s great to sing in the major concert halls in Charlotte, but this is going to be special.” Ledford offered a special word of thanks to First National Bank for underwriting the con- cert. “We've been trying to put this together for about five years. It took a major financial commitment by First National Bank to make it possible.” He further thanked First Baptist Church for hosting the concert. “The church has such a good ambiance and great acoustics, and they've certainly welcomed us with open arms.” Tickets are available at all First National Bank offices and at the Arts Center in Shelby.
