City purchases land near Patriots Park LIZABETH STEWART Herald Correspondent Kings Mountain City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday night to approve BB&T’s financing terms for two parcels of land on Gold Street near Patriots Park and in a second action voted 6-1 on a budget amendment of $155,995 to pay for the two acres owned by the John L. and Lena Ware McGill Estate. “This is a good business invest- ment with a low interest rate of 3.60 percent,” said Councilman Keith Miller who called the pur- chase of the land an asset for the city. Councilman Dean Spears said the city needs the land because of its prime location downtown and near the city- owned gazebo. After the meet- ing, Mayor Rick Murphrey called the board vote a good business investment and said the land could be used for more parking for the gazebo activities but could also be used for other things. Councilman Jerry Mullinax, who cast the dissenting votes, asked the board to table its deci- sion but his motion died for lack of a second. Mullinax said the city had earlier bought land for $80,000 from the McGill Estate, now part of the gazebo property for parking. In other action, Council passed a resolution honoring six Kings Mountain police officers, four state troopers and a Gaston County K-9 officer for the cap- ture Sept. 2, 2007 in Kings Mountain of Daniel Keo Kung, one of the FBI's top “Most Wanted.” Additionally, Council passed a resolution in support of the newly organized Cleveland County Sports Commission. Former Mayor John Henry Moss told the board that activities will be planned county-wide and he was confident of its economic impact. Councilman Dean Spears will represent the city on the committee. The city was recognized by the Kings Mountain Optimist Club with a plaque for installation of lights at the old City Stadium. Coach Jeff Putnam, who made the presentation, said that the original lights date to the late 1950s. After Mullinax requested that the two items involving the pur- chase of land be removed from the consent agenda, the board approved by unanimous vote other consent items, including: + Lowered the speed limit to 25 mph on Edgemont Avenue and Williams Street and from 35 mph to 25 mph in the Country Creek Development and made Guyton Loop a one way street. + Approved agreement with the N. C. Department of Transportation for reinspection of bridges. + Set Nov. 27 for a public hear- ing on the adoption of the new flood damage prevention ordi- nance and new flood insurance rate maps.
