January 3, 2008 The Kings Mountain Herald EDUCATION Academic achievements highlighted at KMHS rally . EMILY WEAVER : eweaver@kingsmountainherald.com Kings Mountain High's recent Academic Pep rallies recognized the accomplish- ments of several students and educators. The Renaissance Leadership Class hosted and created the two rallies under the theme of KMHS Grammy's. “Carmen Scism and Marshia Meeks were the co-hosts of the event and did an outstanding job! Paul Philavong did an out- standing job of coordinating the music that accompanied each presenter, skit and award,” said Renaissance Co-director and KMHS Social Studies teacher Dan Potter. Both Grammy's events turned out to be exciting rallies infused with great rewards. In addition to a special visit from KMHS graduate turned song- writer /producer Ron Feemster and Spencer Pratt from the MTV show “The Hills,” stu- dents were entertained by sev- eral other “stars.” “Various students and faculty impersonated famous singers while others performed com- mercial skits to entertain the audience,” Potter said. The Pep Squad performed chants and dances. Four stu- dent groups took the stage to perform their talents from a pre- vious contest held at the Homecoming Dance earlier this year, according to Potter. Those students were: Justin Gsellman, Matt Ritch, Scotty Machon, Quantria Ross, Jerica Ross, Omar Wingo, and Antonia Garrett. Garrett's pep rally sere- nade inside of Barnes Auditorium caught Feemster’s attention as he stood outside. Intrigued, he ran back inside to catch a glimpse of the singer. One of his fellow producers offered Garrett his card to hear her “sing some more.” Cleveland County Commissioner Mary Accor impersonated Whitney Houston singing, “I believe the children are our future.” She presented a few awards and was also bestowed with a plaque herself, for “Outstanding Community Service.” Former principal and current Assistant Superintendent John Yarbro was presented with a plaque for his “Outstanding Leadership at KMHS ~~ 2000-07.” Gay Henderson, KMHS media spe- cialist who formed the Renaissance Academic Program in 1996, was awarded a plaque for “Originator Award of Excellence.” Teachers of the month were recognized from September: Mrs. Bedford; October: Mrs. Elmore; and November: Mrs. Kendrick.
