The Kings Mountain Herald January 31, 2008 ‘KM swimmers sweep conference titles Kings Mountain swept the 2008 Southwestern 2A/3A Conference swim meet Tuesday at Neisler Natatorium, marking the first time the two teams have won the conference cham- pionship in the same season. The KM girls finished an unbeaten conference season and won their first conference title in nine years. KM compiled 295 points to defeat Shelby (251), R-S Central (199), Chase (151) and East Rutherford (88). . Kings Mountains boys scored 282 points to defeat Shelby (213), Chase (156) and R- S (131). The Mountaineers also swept SWC Swimmers of the Year honors with Taylor Rippy being chosen the Female Swimmer of the Year and Kyle Murphy named Male Swimmer of the Year. Rippy won both the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events and joined Megan Burns, Sarah Greenlee and Dominique Jager on the winning 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams. Murphy won the 100 yard fly and the 100 yard breaststroke and teamed with Joseph Maner, Cline Tate and Kyle Griffin to win the 200 yard free relay. Other first place winners for the Mountaineers were Brooks McGinnis in the 200 yard IM, Jager in the 100 yard freestyle, Maner in the 100 yard back- stroke and Greenlee in the 100 yard breaststroke. Several KM swimmers will advance to the Western Regional Meet Saturday in Huntersville. They include Sarah Hovis, Dominique Jager, Sarah Greenlee, Taylor Rippy, Megan Burns, Kristian Young, Ana Alpeter, Kyle Murphy, Joseph Maner, Kyle Griffin, Cline Tate, Joe Gladden and Brooks McGinnis. Men's 400 oy KMA team (Cline Tate, Jos Maner, Kyle Murphy, Kyle or od Mountaineers sweep Burns i in key SWC Kings Mountain High's bas- ketball teams took a big step toward post-season playoff herths by sweeping 3A rival Burns Friday in a Southwestern 2A /3A Conference double- header at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium. The wins, along with a sweep ; of R-S Central the previous Tuesday night, leave the KM teams unbeaten against 3A con- ference foes. The top two 3A teams earn post-season berths. Kings Mountain must play both teams again later in the season. The girls completely domi- nated the Lady Bulldogs in the opener, 65-33. Marshia Meeks led the scoring with 22 points and Evan Bragg contributed 18. Kings Mountain stormed to a 23-6 first quarter lead and led 33-12 at halftime and 56-22 going into the fourth quarter. It was much tougher for the KM boys as they stormed from behind in the fourth quarter to edge the Bulldogs 67-60. Burns led 17-12 after the first quarter but KM came back to hold a 36-34 halftime edge. The Bulldogs outscored the Mounties 15-12 in the third quarter to take a 49-48 lead into the final eight minutes. The Bulldogs led 54-53 with five minutes left but KM put on a 7-0 run and was able to hit some big foul shots down the stretch to preserve the lead Santonio Poole led the Mountaineers with 23 points, including six 3-point field goals. Devin Thompson added 13 points and four rebounds, and Jonathon Hines scored 11 points. Hines and Poole also had five assists each. HB Kings Mountain's JVs also continued their winning ways but had to go overtime to beat the JV Bulldogs 49-48. Kings Mountain came from five points down with 1:30 to go in overtime. Cameron Roseboro’s 4-point play - his only points of the night - was the difference. In the girls game, Country Day built a 24-15 halftime lead " and then outscored the Lady Mounties 12-2 in the third quar- ter to turn the game into a rout. Marshia Meeks led the KM scoring with 14 points. In boys action, Country Day bolted to a 21-7 first quarter lead and never looked back. They led 38-18 at the half and 53-26 going into the fourth quarter. Chris Perkins led the Mounties with six points and Devin Thompson had four points and four rebounds. County Day won the boys JV game 38-30.
