Patriots beat Shelby 13- 10 Kings Mountain Middle School opened its baseball season Friday with a 13-10 Victory over Shelby. Will Sellers went 2-for-4 and Taylor Cash, Mitchell Cloninger, Cameron Pittman, Matthew Moss, Trey Sellers, Logan McGill and Canaan Green had a hit apiece for the Patriots. Trey Sellers, Matthew Moss, Will Sellers, Logan McGill, Taylor Cash and Cameron Pittman shared pitching duties. Will Sellers scored on a fielders choice and Trey Sellers singled in a run to give the Pats a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Shelby came back to take a 3-2 lead in the bot- tom of the inning, but KM went back on top for good with two runs in the top of the second. Tyler Gilliam reached on a error and scored on a hit by Taylor Cash to tie the game, and Cash later scored on a passed ball to put KM on top. KM scored four in the third to go up 8-3. Pittman and Will Sellers had the only hits in the inning but KM also took advantage of two Shelby errors. KM built a 13-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh but Shelby scored five runs and had the potential tying run at bat with two outs. Coach Monty Deaton called on Pittman to pitch and he struck out the batter to end the game. Each team committed three costly errors and KM also benefited from six bases on balls. “This team has a lot of pressure right now because we're coming off a 14-2 season,” Deaton said. “We're mixing up pitchers right now. Hopefully somebody will step up and we'll get a good combination going. We'll have to play bet- ter defense and get people out. We won - and that’s good - but we can’t make errors every game and expect to win them all. We're smaller than we've been in the past but most of the kids should grow and get better as the season goes along.” Mountaineer tennis team beats Forestview Kings Mountain High's ten- nis team opened its season Thurs., Feb. 28 with a 6-3 victo- ry over Forestview but then lost to St. Stephens 5-4 on Monday. be Kings Mountain travels to Ashbrook today.
