Page 4 OBITUARIES CATHERINE H. MAUNEY KINGS MOUNTAIN - Catherine H. Mauney, 101, of Covenant Village, Gastonia, died March 24, 2008 at Covenant Village. She was born in Conover on December 14, 1906 to Dr. and Mrs. Franklin L. Herman. She was educated in Catawba County at the Free School Concordia College and graduat- ed from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1929. After teaching school for a year, she married Carl Fisher Mauney in 1930 and they set- tled in his hometown of Kings Mountain. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl E Mauney, daughter-in-law, Emily Fisher Mauney, and granddaughter-in-law, Rebecca Hockaday Mauney. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, and faith- fully served God and her church. Mrs. Mauney was a full time homemaker, an active member of Kings Mountain Garden, Club, the Kings Mountain Woman's Club, and the Home Arts Club. For over 78 years she was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church serving on the Altar Guild and the Women of the Church and as a Sunday School and Bible Study teacher. She was an extraordinary gar- dener, growing a bounty of fruits and vegetables for family and friends, but her expertise was as a rose horticulturist, growing over 100 varieties, which she tended and gave for celebratory events to family, friends and the community. In 1993 Mrs. Mauney sold her home in Kings Mountain and moved to Covenant Village, a retirement community in Gastonia, where she has enjoyed living, lately one of the oldest and most admired resi- dents. She is survived by her sons, Herman Mauney of Albuquerque, NM and Charles Mauney and wife Lynne of Blowing Rock; daughter Kay Berkeley and husband Bill of Spartanburg, SC; nine grand- children, Carl, Charles, Cathy, Kaki, Carla, Leigh, Stephen, Beth and Jon; 17 great-grand- children and one great-great grandchild. A memorial service was con- ducted by the Revs. Bill Jeffcoat and David Lohr at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. A private entombment was held at the family mausoleum at Mountain Rest Cemetery. WANDA GAIL CAMP JORDAN * KINGS MOUNTAIN - Wanda Gail Camp Jordan, 57, 413 Crescent Hill, died March 26, 2008 at Cleveland Regional Hospital. She was born in Cleveland County, daughter of the late James P. and Marcie Barkley Camp. She was a mem- ber of First Wesleyan Church where she worked with the Kids Club and was a choir member. She was an employee of Western Carolina Supply, Shelby. She is survived by her. com- panion of 15 years, Darrell Thornburg of Kings Mountain; daughters Laura Jordan Hamm of Kings Mountain and Anna Lynn Fowler and husband Junior of Fountain Inn,’ SC; son Zachary Elijah Colton Thornburg and wife Pamela of Oceanside, CA; sisters Teresia Anne Ladd of Kings Mountain and Kathie Jane Ladd of Kings Mountain; and grandchildren Courtney Hamm, Lea Brooke Hamm and Ethan Fowler. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Don Williams, David Chapman and Gary Teague Jr., at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2008 at First Wesleyan Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The Kings Mountain Herald LURENE ELMORE PROCTOR KINGS MOUNTAIN - Lurene Elmore Proctor, 83, 1:73 1 4 Bethlehem Road, died March 28, 2008 at Hospice at Wendover, Shelby. She was born in Cleveland County. She was the daughter of the late Free Elmore and Roxanna Waters Elmore. She was the wife for 41 years of the late Burgin William Proctor. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Richard Price Proctor, Steve Proctor and Jack Proctor; three brothers “and three sisters. She was retired from Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Pat P. Smith and husband Gary of Kings Mountain, Jody Hope and husband Dennis Hope Sr. of Kings Mountain, Gail P. Bollinger and husband Larry of Lincolnton, Carol Wells and husband Dennis of Kings Mountain, Connie P. Williams and husband Roger Goforth of Kings Mountain, Pauline Ruppe of Kings Mountain, Helen Welch of Kings Mountain, and Annie Ruth Connor and husband Aaron of Kings Mountain; brother Austin Elmore of Greensboro; sister Elsie Elmore of Lincolnton; 29 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 10 great- great grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Dennis Wells at 3 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008 at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. RUTH HARDING GRANTHAM Ruth Harding Grantham died Tuesday, March 26, at Friends Homes at Guilford. A Memorial Service was held at New Garden Friends Meeting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008. David Bills and Rev. Margie Boyd presided. Interment was in New Garden Cemetery. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 24, 1906 to Edward R. Harding and Mae Snyder Harding. She moved to Greensboro with her family in her youth, where she graduated from Greensboro Senor High School (now Grimsley) and completed the business course at Woman's College (now UNC- G). In 1924 she married William Gurney Grantham of Guilford College, with whom she cele- brated 67 years of marriage before his death in 1991. Ruth Grantham worked for the YMCA in Greensboro, raised two daughters, and was book- keeper for Victory Chevrolet Company, the family-owned business in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. After retire- ment, the Granthams moved to Ashe County, where they built a home on the New River and lived until they became resi- dents at Friends Homes Guilford in 1988. Ruth Grantham was a lover of nature, handcrafts, music, trav- eling and always enjoyed enter- taining family and friends. She participated in choral and handbell groups and was a Girl Scout leader in the Greensboro- Guilford Council, receiving the THANKS BADGE award for service which is the highest badge awarded for adult serv- ice. During her lifetime, Ruth Grantham attended New Garden Meeting, Bethany United Methodist Church, (West Jefferson, NC) and most recently First Friends Meeting. Siblings predeceasing her were Dwight E. Harding, Winifred H. Bray, Sue H. Green and Jack M. Harding. The Grantham’s children, Betty G. Holjes and Bobbe G. Jackson, both of Greensboro, survive her along with brother, April 3, 2008 Richard G. Harding of Alabama. Survivors also include grandchildren Gurney Kaufman and A. Scott Jackson of Greensboro, Susan McClanahan of Jamestown, Alan Jackson of Mount Pleasant, SC, Tommy Jackson of Bedford, Texas, Carol Ann Baker of West Jefferson, NC; thirteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchil- dren. CUBIE LEE MITCHAM GAFENEY, SC - Cubie Lee Mitcham, 88, of Peachtree Centre, went home to be with the Lord on March 25, 2008 at Peachtree Centre. Born in Crowders Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Junius Lee Mitcham and Lillie Guyton Mitcham. She was retired from Phoenix Mill in Kings Mountain and was a Pentecostal. She is survived by a son, Paul J. Dunn and wife Nancy of Forest City; daughter Zora (Becky) Waltman and husband John Jr. of Gaffney; six grand- children, 14 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchil- dren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Steven Dunn, and by two great-grand- sons, Hayden Arrowood and Michael Arrowood. A graveside service was con- ducted by the Rev.
