Kings Mountain finished sec- ond to Shelby in the annual Cleveland County High School Golf Tournament Wednesday at Kings Mountain Country Club. The Lions posted a 302 total. KM shot 326, Crest 335 and Burns 352. Ben Wright of Crest was medalist with a 68. Cory Phillips and Camden DeVane led the Mountaineers with 81s. Jared Spicer and Hogan Sellers each shot 82, Stuart Smith shot 106 and Erica Hicks 109. B Kings Mountain finished fourth in the final SWC match Monday at Forest City Municipal and also finished fourth in the final SWC stand- ings. Cumulative scores from all SWC matches were used to determine the standings. Shelby won Monday’s match with a 295, followed by East 308, R-S 311, KM 330, Chase 354 an Burns 363. B.J. Terry of East was medalist with a 67. KM was led by Cory Phillips with a 79. Hogan Sellers shot 81, Camden DeVane 82, Boone McDaniel 88, Jared Spicer 89 and Stuart Smith 95. Phillips, Sellers, Spicer and DeVane qualified for the Western Regional Tournament May 5 at Asheville Municipal. R-S won the SWC with a sea- son’s total of 1808, followed by Shelby 1813, East 2005, KM 2072, Chase 2166 and Burns 2189. KMMS tennis team defeats Bums 6-3 Kings Mountain Middle School defeated Burns 6-3 in tennis last Wednesday. Singles winners for the Patriots were Trent Rhea, Anna Griffin, Elizabeth Baker and Emily Peeler. - Doubles winners were Griffin and Baker, and Morgan Robinson at\d Ridge Scruggs. Mountaineer JV soccer team blanks East Lincoln Kings Mountain High's JV soccer team defeated East Lincoln 2-0 Thursday. Elizabeth Wells scored unas- sisted in the 12th minute from 20 yards out. She played a great ball over the keepers head and in the back of the net. Whitney Moss scored in the 42nd minute to make it 2-0. Wells had the assist. Moss broke away from the defense down: the right side and played the ball just past the keeper. Victoria Greene played a great game in the mid field and had a couple of scoring chances late in the game. Shelbee Ward posted her fourth shutout at goal. Thunderbolts, Connor beat Mt. View 15-8 The Hope Christian Academy baseball team overcame a slug- gish start defensively and improved to 8-1 overall with a 15-8 win over Mt. View Christian Academy of Cowpens, SC. The Thunderbolts used a five run first inning and a six run sixth inning to win their sixth game in a row. Dallas Conner (2-0) picked up the win by pitching three shut- out innings to close out the game. Conner and Ethan Segars led Hope offensively as they col- lected two hits apiece and com- bined to score four runs while driving in nine more. Micah Rivera reached base three times with a hit and a couple of walks and scored all three times. The Kings Mountain Herald Women’s swim team wins NCHSAA award Kings Mountain High's women’s swimming team won one of the 16 Scholar-Athlete Team Awards from the NCH- SAA for the fall and winter sports seasons. Kings Mountain had a team grade-point average of 3.770 and was the only women’s swim team in the state to win the award. The only other swim team to win the honor was the Lumberton men’s team Southern Guilford won three scholar-athlete team awards in volleyball, cheerleading and men’s soccer. Rocky Mount was a double-winner in women’s and men’s cross country. Doty’s bat, Phillips’ arm lead JV Mountaineers Kings Mountain High's JV baseball team defeated Shelby 4-1 Thursday. Ryan Doty went 2-for-4 with two triples, and Austin Phillips went 2-for-3. Brian Brown, Michael Homesley and Casey Hutchins had one hit each. Phillips went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits and striking out 10. He did- n’t walk a batter. Page 9 KM Sports Hall of Fame tickets on sale at Herald The Kings Mountain Sports Halt of Fame dinner and induc- tion ceremony will be Saturday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church Christian Activity Center. This year’s inductees are for- mer KMHS volleyball coach Dianna Bridges, former KMHS and Belmont Abbey basketball star LaVar Curry, martial arts champion Robbie Eng, and the Western NC champion 1990 KMHS wrestling team. Several deserving KMHS sen- iors will be awarded college scholarships. Four persons who have had a longtime association with youth sports in the Kings Mountain area will receive Distinguished Service Awards. They include Major Loftin, Buddy Medlin, Floyd Sanders and Jake Dixon.
