Childers last week was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Southeast All- Region second team. “Morgan is well deserving of this honor,” said Upstate coach Chris Hawkins. “It says a lot about her, and our team, that she earned an all-region selection in her first season in college and our first year in Division I. She had a dominant year and performed consis- tently game-in and game-out. She pitched in 39 of our 49 games: and did.so at a high level. While softball is a team game, I can safely say that without her we would not have been as successful this season.” By earning regional honors, Childers will be placed in the pool for All-America consider- ation. Childers is one of seven players from the A-Sun to earn all-region honors. Childers had an outstanding year for Upstate, earning the win in 27 of the Spartans’ 34 victories, including 12 of their 16 conference wins. Her per- formance helped the Spartans to a share of the regular season A-Sun championship in the school’s first year as a member of the NCAA Division Iand the A-Sun. She led the A-Sun in wins (27), a 1.37 ERA and a .171 opponent’s batting aver- age en route to being named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year. It marked the first time in league history that a player earned pitcher and freshman of the year honors in the same sea- son. A first team all-conference selection, her 27 wins was the fifth best mark in 2008 with a 27-5 record and two saves. Childers started the season striking out a school record 18 batters in her collegiate debut against Tusculum and closed out the season with a pair of wins in a doubleheader sweep of Mercer. In between, she had a . record-breaking year. In addition to the single-game school strikeouts record, she established new single season school records with 27 wins, 258 strikeouts, 10 shutouts, 39 appearances and 214 innings pitched. Childers ranked in the top ten in the A-Sun in all nine pitching categories. CONVENTION From Page 18 female delegate, and one Obama male delegate.
