TS — LOCAL ntain Herald June 12, 2008 Three local debs to be honored at Shelby’s 62nd annual Debutante Ball on Saturday Thirty-seven young women from area cities and towns will be presented to society in the Junior Charity League of Shelby’s 62nd Annual Debutante Ball, to be held Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs. The event will include the debutantes, their chief mar- shals, assistant marshals, moth- ers and invited guests. Of the 37, Laura Ashley Gaffney, of Kings Mountain, and Allison Grace Cummings and Brittany Jean Floyd, both of Shelby, will be inducted. During the 2007-08 school year, the Junior Charity League’s Clothing Room pro- vided clothing and a warm coat to over 900 underprivileged children in Cleveland County. And Cleveland County’s third grade elementary students were presented a program through the use of the Kids on the Block puppets on such topics as child abuse, drug awareness and mental and physical handicaps. Gaffney is the daughter of Michael Curtis and Charlene Yarbro Gaffney and grand- daughter of Jacob Ed Yarbro, all of Kings Mountain, and the late Billie Jean Yarboro and the late Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Victor Gaffney. She will be escorted by her father, Chief Marshall Michael Curtis Gaffney, and by her brother, Assistant Marshall Lance Hunter Gaffney. Cummings is the daughter of Mark Christopher and Laura Poston Cummings of Shelby and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Lewis Poston of Kings Mountain and Mr. and Mrs. James Louis Cummings of Laura Ashley Gaffney Shelby. She will be escorted by her father, Chief Marshall Mark Christopher Cummings and by Assistant Marshall Richard Matthew Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Yocum Kelly of Shelby. Allison Grace Cummings Floyd is the daughter of Alston Ray Jr. and Danna Scism Floyd (league member) of Polkville and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Neal Scism of Kings Mountain and Mary Jean Lattimore Floyd and the late Brittany Jean Floyd Alston Ray Floyd, Sr. of Polkville. She will be escorted by her father, Chief Marshall Alston Ray Floyd, Jr. and by her brother, Assistant Marshall Adam Neal Floyd. Commission seeks Distinguished Women of 2008 The Cleveland County Commission for Women will host its 16th annual Distinguished Women’s Banquet on August 14, 2008 at North Lake Country Club, in Shelby, at 6:30 am. Betsy Wells is chairing the 2008 Banquet Committee and is solic- iting nominations for this year’s “Distinguished Women.” The group wants to honor women who have made significant con- tributions to the lives of others and to the community. Nomination forms may be picked up at: the Mauney Memorial Library; Cleveland County Board of Elections and the Cleveland County Public Library, in Shelby; or the Gardner-Webb University Library, in Boiling Springs. Deadlines for all applications will be June 18, 2008. Applications should be mailed to the Post Office Box, in Shelby, or given to a member of the Commission by the deadline. Members of the Commission are: Kay Wallace, Rosaline Hunt, Debra Blanton, Alva Finney, Sherri Sharpe, Mitzi Johnson, Mary Accor, Peggy Strickland, Betty McKesson, Robert Miller, Diane Davis, Esther Plummer, Valerie Boyd, Linda Martin, and Betsy Wells. Women who have been hon- ored since 2002 as “Distinguished Women” are: In 2002: Beverly Shuford, the late Kathleen Hamrick, and Ezra Bridges. In 2003: Karla Haynes, Brenda Page, and the late Betty Roberts. In 2004: LouVerne McCray, Jane Bryson Blake, and the late Bess Gardner Hoey. In Cabiness named Excellence in Care Specialist at LEC Linda Cabiness, of Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care and Health Service, recently complet- ed training by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to become an Excellence in Care Specialist. The objective of the pro- gram is. to Be oa nationwide ‘standard to Xogon Rg help “ensure quality of care for drwio als with dementia and their fami- lies, and the availability of optimal care settings in local communities.” Cabiness, who is a com- munity outreach coordi- nator at LEC, passed the exam to become a special- ist after comprehensive training in Baltimore, con- ducted by AFA and the Avila Institute of Gerontology. The LEC strives to pelp : 1 families keep adults of a ages and with many, dif- ferent diagnoses in their homes and in the commu- nity. It also offers support groups for families.
