“Zelnik the Magician”
received a “You Got Mail” mes-
sage, instructing him to find
“the reading bug,” which pos-
sesses. the secret of being a
“super-reader,” at the start of
Mauney Library's
Summer Reading Program
Friday morning at Central
UMC. He had to find the bug
before the “evil Captain Video
Box,” who would do away with
reading.
“Reading, that’s where you
come in. You can find it and
share the secret with everyone,”
Zelnik’s computer said to him.
“If you would like to get some
of your friends to help that
would be perfectly acceptable.”
“Friends” were audience chil-
dren who had participated all
summer long. Through music,
magic, library clues, and games
they and Zelnik discovered that
he had already caught the read-
ing bug because he enjoyed
what he was reading.
Christy Conner, Children’s
Librarian said Greg Zeleznik
(Zelnik) out of Charlotte was
one on a list of performers, “the
state library gives us who have
been seen before.” | |
“Catch the Reading Bug” had
consecutive Wednesday shows
at Central (from other entertain-
End-of-.
ers on the list) which united big
and little kids. The program
also had a bug museum, multi-
ple computer programs, and a
Mrs. Frizzle actress from “The
Magic School Bus” book series.
“The theme was a great
theme: We've had close to 600
register. It (the reading bug) has
definitely been caught,” Conner
stated.
Another important ingredient
to the Summer Reading pro-
gram which Conner claims
made this year possible were
the teen volunteers. They ran
the mobile “Summer Reading
Store” where they came-up
with the inventory list, prizes,
etc.
“It takes manpower. They
(the teens) have shown a strong
work ethic,” Conner said. “And
during the month of August I
will be taking all the teens out
for the day as a thank you.”
August also means a month
in which Conner said that she’s
taking a break before beginning
to plan programs for the school
year.
