KM kickers to open season ___ GARY STEWART Sports Editor Kings Mountain High's new men’s soccer coach, Daniel Wydo, is putting out a plea for more players. Not that he is not pleased with the ones he has. They are good athletes that are progress- ing well. But, there's just not enough of them. Wydo, whose team opens its regular season Monday night at 6 p.m. against Hunter Huss at John Gamble Stadium, has only 14 players. Although he’s confi- dent he can put a good team on the field, over a 20-game regu- lar season, especially if injuries set in, depth will be a problem. Wydo welcomes all high school boys to come out for the team, either by showing up at practice each weekday after- noon at 6 p.m. or by contacting the school to get his telephone number and giving him a call. He said players are also wel- come to come out after school starts on Monday, August 25. Wydo, who has seven years of coaching in Gaston County, has only three seniors from last year’s KM team that qualified for the state 3A playoffs. Nine seniors graduated. Most of this year’s players so far are fresh- men. Four players that either start- ed or saw a lot of playing time last year are Tony Chanthaphaeng, Brannigan Wheeler, Kyle Jarrell, and Tanner Deaton. Joining the team this year is sophomore Jonathon Brucker, who played at Hope Christian last year, Matthew Hord and sophomore Reggie Pina, who moved to Kings Mountain from Florida. Other members of the team are Adam Bridges, Jordan Stowe, Derek Thammavosonga, Durham Harmon and David Dettloff. “We're very young,” Wydo says. “We will be limited in a lot of things. We have such a small squad. We have only 14 players and we're interested in picking up a few more. Being a new coach it’s hard for me because I don’t have any teaching experi- ence at the school and don’t know who to ask to come out. I want everyone who's interested in playing to know that they can still come out for the team. “I've talked to the boys straight up,” he added. “We know it will be a rebuilding year. But we have a good solid starting squad. It'll be hard to tackle a 20-game schedule with 14 players. The key to our suc- cess will be if we pick up some more players. I believe we have a pretty solid lineup but if someone goes down to injury he will be hard to replace. We need to pick up three or four more players.” Wydo fully expects his team to improve as the season pro- gresses. By mid to late season, after he’s had the opportunity to work with the younger play- ers, he says the Mountaineers could be a very good squad. The Mountaineers should have one of the top players in the region in .junior Tony Chanthaphaeng. Wydo calls him a college prospect. “He's an amazing player, def- initely one of the best players in our region. He’s one of the best I've seen. He's very solid,” Wydo said. Brucker also is very solid, and in time Wydo said he will also be a college prospect. “From coaching in Gaston County for so long, I know all of the players over there,” he said. “Tony's definitely right up there with them.” The Mountaineers will get a tough test at home on Tuesday, Sept. 2 when they host Ashbrook, then they will play away games against Hunter Huss, South Point and Crest before returning home on September 22 to host Chase in - their first Southwestern Conference game. with actual case studies.
