September 17, 2008 «The Kings Mountain Herald Page 7 LOCAL Police standoff i in KM ends with arrest i EMILY WEAVER i eweaver@kingsmountainherald.com Several Kings Mountain Police officers exhibited restraint and grace under fire on a recent call, according to Capt. Derek Johnson. When lives could have been taken, they were spared. On September 3, 2008 at approximately 9:25 p.m., six Kings Mountain Police officers responded to a domestic call at 406 Belvedere Circle, where a white male, later identified as Arnold Eugene Mauney, 48, of Blacksburg, SC, was reportedly firing into a residence from the front porch. When officers arrived they witnessed Mauney “actively fir- ing rounds into the front door,” according to information released by Capt. Johnson. The perpetrator was allegedly armed with two guns and, after repeated commands for him to drop the weapons, Johnson said that he raised one of the firearms aiming, once again, in the “immediate direction” of the bystanders involved. An officer fired a shot at the sus- pect, but luckily missed his tar- get. However, Mauney allegedly continued to ignore the officers’ pleas for him to put the weapons down and turned the to his own head. After a brief standoff, he eventually surrendered to officers and was placed into custody, according to Johnson. Mauney was transported to Kings Mountain Hospital for a non-life threatening laceration to his hand. He was then taken to the Cleveland County Law Enforcement Center and went before a magistrate, where he was given a $200,000 bond, according to police. Mauney faces felony charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and Discharging a Weapon into an Occupied Dwelling. Det. Johnson agreed that the outcomes in this case could have been more dire. “Nobody got hurt,” he said, adding that it ended with a “good result.” He credits the officers for the successful apprehension of Mauney and admitted that it can be hard to stay a trigger in an intense situation where shots are being fired. “They really showed a lot of compassion and restraint,” he said. “Their train- ing in tactics came into play. They utilized that training and had a good outcome.” Every YNemorable YNoment eserves Diamonds 1033. 14K Round Diamond Bridal Set, 11/2 Ct. TW. 112 Carat TW.
