September 24, 2008 LIFESTYLES —— SOCIAL BRIEFS Holmes celebrate 50th wedding anniversary at National Whitewater Ctr. Raymond Herbert Holmes and Sylvia Lynn Holmes of Denver, NC, celebrated their 50th wedding September 20, 2008. Over 100 guests enjoyed a reception at the US National Whitewater Center. The Holmes were married September 20, 1958 in Leeds, England. Their children are Chris Holmes and his wife Mildred of Washington, D.C. and Lindsay Meakin and her husband Chuck of Gastonia, NC. Their grandchildren are Jack and Maisy Meakin and Caroline Holmes. After the birth of their two children, Ray's employer Imperial Chemical relocated the family from England to the joint venture Fiber Industries in Shelby, NC. The family resided Rend [@)! anniversary in Kings Mountain from 1962 until 1982. In 1983, after Chris and Lindsay both graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, Ray was transferred to Salisbury and the Holmes moved to their current home on Lake Norman. Ray served in the Royal Air Force and retired in 1992 from Hoechst Celanese with 41 years of service. Sylvia retired in 1996 after working as a newspaper contributor for the Kings Mountain Herald, teacher in the Kings Mountain Schools and, most recently, 16 years service as the Executive Director of the Pioneer Girl Scout Council. Former members of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain, the Holmes are active members of Denver United Methodist Church. An opening cere- mony will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 2, 2008. During the opening ceremony, the names of the 121 fallen heroes from Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Rutherford and Cherokee counties will be read. The closing ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2008. The Vietnam Memorial, in Washington, D.C., stands as a reminder of the sacrifices of the 2.7 million American men and women of the Armed Forces made in serv- ice to our country. Inspired by such dedication, a group of Vietnam Veterans had a vision to honor the 58,000 fallen heroes and share the meaning of this memorial with everyone. The Moving Wall has vis- ited over 1,000 communities throughout the country, providing an opportunity for loved ones, com- rades and all who love America to pay tribute to those who served their country with honor. Little Miss Cleveland County Pageant is Oct. 11, entry deadline Oct. 3 The Little Miss Cleveland County Princess Pageant will be held on Saturday, October 11. The deadline to enter is Friday, October 3: Sponsored by the Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association, the pag- eant begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be held at Bessemer City High School in conjunction with Little Miss Gastonia and Little Miss Lincoln County. Girls newborn to age 18 will compete for the opportunity to represent Cleveland County in the 2009 Little Miss North Carolina State Pageant.
