RACHAEL FARLEY RALEIGH - Rachael “Cy” Smith Farley passed away Sunday, September 21, 2008 after a brief illness. Through the end Cy maintained her trade- mark inde- pendence and determi- nation. She is the child of James Davis Smith II and Kate McLaughen Smith of Kings Mountain. Born February 7, 1923 she spent many carefree days with her childhood friends who have remained close friends. With a vocal scholarship to Meredith College, she arrived in Raleigh on the eve of World War II. Once war broke out, she imme- diately transferred to Charlotte Memorial where she complet- ed her Nursing degree in 1945. While at Charlotte Memorial she met her husband, William Winfree Farley, who was com- pleting his first year of intern- ship. Married on January 20, 1945 she continued on while he was dispatched to the Pacific. She joined the Red Cross in 1945, and worked in the D.C. area until the completion of the war. When Bill returned, they worked their way around North Carolina eventually set- tling in Raleigh in 1951. Rachael was a life member of the North Carolina Art Society and the North Carolina Natural History Museum. Along with her close friends, she initiated the Raleigh Fine Art Society. While helping to get the organization going, she pushed hard to have both the carousel at Pullen Park and Chavis Park refurbished. They stand today as a part of her efforts. While President of the Wake County Medical Auxiliary, she was approached by the Wake County Schools to help initiate a health program for children. With her efforts and the con- tinuing efforts of her close friends, this concept found a home at the Poe Center in Raleigh. Rachael is survived by her husband of 63 years William W. Farley; two children, William Winfree Farley, Jr of Chapel Hill and Mary Charlotte Farley of Raleigh; two grandchildren, William W. Farley III and Margaret Mason Farley both of Chapel Hill. She was born June 9, 1920 in Baden, NC, but most of her childhood was spent in Wingate with her beloved par- ents and siblings on the family farm. A graduate of Wingate High School and Wingate College, she also attended Wake Forest College. Kings Mountain was where she and her first husband, Fleete McCurdy, built their family businesses — McCurdy Dry Cleaners and the Cottonwood Restaurant — and reared their two daughters. Organist for decades at First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, Ellen also provided the music for hundreds of weddings and funerals. Along the way, she taught many chil- dren and adults to play the piano. Although she was a tal- ented, trained and accom- plished musician, she also had a particularly rare gift of play- ing the piano by ear. She was generous with her gift of music, sharing her talent with her family and friends almost until the very end. Indeed, music was her vocation, avoca- tion and friend. Ellen was predeceased by her first husband, Fleete McCurdy and their infant daughter, Marsha; her second husband, Broadus Elam; par- ents, FE. Carl Black and Annie Perry Black of Wingate; broth- ers, Jerry, James and Layne Black; sister, Anne Black Merritt; and son-in-law, Wilson C. Bellenger.
