© 5889 Page 4 OBITUARIES NELSON DIXON KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ira Nelson Dixon, 90, of 1016 Margrace Road, died September 28, 2008 at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was the son of the late Ira and Mattie Blackburn Dixon. He was husband of the late Lela Pryor Dixon. He was also preceded in death by daughter, Frances Kay Pearson and three brothers. He was a charter member of Harvest Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a great daddy, loved gardening, had a green thumb and could grow pep- per that would burn the wings off a grasshopper. He is survived by daugh- ters, Arlene Dixon Underwood of Kings Mountain, Brenda Blalock and husband Royce of Shelby, and Diane Dixon of Kings Mountain; son, Bobby Green and wife Judy of Kings Mountain; brothers, Harley Dixon of Paducah, Ken. and Sydney Roy Dixon of Kings Mountain; sisters, Frances Dotson of Kings Mountain, Sarah Ruppe of Gaffney, SC, and Helen Wells of Kings Mountain; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. Harris Funeral Home RHUA “BOBBY” FLOCK COLUMBIA, Md. - Rhua Vernice “Bobby” Flock, 86, died July 19, 2008 at Howard County Hospital in Columbia, Md., follow- ing a brief ill- ness. A full military service will be held at 1 pam, Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery. She was born May 3, 1922 in Osage, Mo., daughter of the late Phineus Rhoads and Myrtle Reed Rhoads and spent her childhood in Linn, Mo. Bobby served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII from 1944-48 and was a lifetime member of the Women Marines Association. She was a very active member of this group and, over the years, held the offices of both president and vice-president of the Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore chapters. She was also an active member of the local Marine Corps League of Howard County, Md. She graduated from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga. in 1971 at the age of 49, with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She worked for the Atlanta Court System for sever- al years until the age of 72 as an accomplished real estate agent. Bobby was an avid reader, a lover of history, and always kept up with current events and politics. She was a world travel- er, having traveled to most of the continents at least once, and returning to her favorite loca- tions many times. She contin- ued to travel around the coun- try until the time of her death, her last trip being to Boston to celebrate her 86th birthday, just two months before she died. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Kathleen; two husbands, Arthur N. Wilcox and Arthur E. Flock; two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her children, daughter-in-law and sons-in- law, Steve Wilcox and Stephanie Knopp of Philadelphia, Katie and Joe Champion of Kings Mountain, Jim Wilcox of Boston, Patricia and Stephan Segedy of Boston, and Maureen and Michael Lynch of Columbia, Md.; seven grand- children, Nathan, Kathryn, Ahron, Patrick, Emilie, Sam and Joshua; five step grandchildren, Tina, Danny, Sean, Jason and Andy; one great granddaugh- ter, Mackenzie; two sisters, bisioH risinuecht eax? odT The Kings Mountain Herald Larraine Maloney of St. Louis, Mo. and Virginia Seidner of Jefferson City, Mo.; and numer- ous nieces and nephews. ROBERT LEE BLACK KINGS MOUNTAIN - Robert Lee “Robbie” Black, 41, of 503 N. City Street, died September 27, 2008 in Kings Mountain. He was a native of Cleveland County. He was employed with American Dornier, Charlotte. He was a faithful blood donor. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Walter “Butch” Morrison, Jr., -56, resi- dent of the Brian Center in Gastonia, died September 27, 2008 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Cleveland County, son of the late Walter Diairsviin “Red” and Christine Marie Gallant Morrison, Sr. He was also preceded in death by sister, Mary Anne Correll. Born with spina bifida and hydro- cephalus, Butch was not expect- ed to survive at birth. He defied predictions by the medical pro- fession and his family was blessed with his presence for 56 years. Even though paralyzed, Butch never complained of his disability and lived a life teach- ing others by his example of courage, patience, generosity and love. He was Cleveland County's Easter Seal Child of 1967. In the mid-1970s, Butch served as an honorary dispatcher for the Kings Mountain Police Department. He enjoyed many years operating a citizens-band radio and was a communica- tions officer with REACT of Cleveland County. As an active resident of the Brian Center for the past three years, Butch served as past president of the residents’ council and volunteer mail carrier. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and enjoyed dinner out- ings with the men’s group. An avid sports fan, the Redskins and Atlanta Braves now have their most devoted and loyal fan watching from above. He is survived by his brother, John Morrison of Shelby; and sister, Cecelia Morrison Meade and husband Scott of Gastonia. The funeral was conducted by Deacon Jack Weisenhorn at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Gas Department The Gas Department, under the direction of Mike Nicholson, serves 3,836 customers. “We service over 123 miles of gas manes and some 22 miles (have been added) since 1972 and I think Mike's had the same eight people helping him forever. They just do a wonderful job,” Murphrey said. Library, special events and other notes He said that renovations to the library should be complete by the end of this month. The City of Kings Mountain hosts over 30 events a year, according to Murphrey.
