City Council gives green light
to proposed new businesses
by ELIZABETH STEWART
staff writer
Kings Mountain City
Council Tuesday night
gave the green light to
the development of
two new businesses - a
funeral home on Phifer
Road and a possible
convenience store in
the Midpines Commu-
nity.
Their action to re-
zone properties owned
by the Episcopal Dio-
cese of North Carolina
and Dub and Carolyn
Blalock paved the way
for the sale to develop-
ers.
By 6-1 vote last
Tuesday, the city plan-
ning and zoning board
voted to recommend
the rezoning. Bob Scog-
gins, who cast the no
vote, said he’d like to
see a church remain in
the present location on
Phifer/Landing
Streets.
Eric Bester, execu-
tive of Clay Barnette
Funeral Home in
Shelby, wants to oper-
ate a full scale funeral
home in the Trinity
Church location. He
said some concern had
been expressed about
the stained glass win-
dows in the sanctuary,
which were donated by
Ed Henry Smith, now
of Charlotte, in mem-
ory of his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. E. A. Smith,
who had belonged to
the church for a num-
ber of years. Bester
said no structural
changes would be
made and the stained
glass windows would
enhance the funeral
home since services
could be held in the
sanctuary chapel.
Vester, who also plans
to pave the 60-space
parking lot, said it will
probably be late spring
or early summer before
the funeral business
opens in Kings Moun-
tain.
“Community callers
have been supportive
of our plans,” Bester
said.
During the public
hearing, traffic con-
cerns on Margrace and
Bethlehem roads were
addressed by three citi-
zens, who reside in the
area.
Garden Club makes trays
The Town and Country Garden Club met at First
Presbyterian Church Scout Hut December 11.
Members enjoyed Chicken Tex Mex as well as hot-
dogs, slaw and chili. Dessert was a delicious sweet po-
tato pie and orange fruit cake baked by hostesses Susan
Gibson and Dot Dixon.
As members have done in past years they brought
a variety of greenery to make tray favors for Kings
Mountain Hospital and White Oak Manor. Added to
the 55 containers were a Christmas card, small bow
and peppermint stick.

A three-month-long
investigation of drug
sales in the Ebenezer
Community by the
Cleveland County Sher-
iff’s Department re-
sulted Friday in the
arrest of two Kings
Mountain men and an
arrest warrant issued
for at third man, ac-
cording to Sheriff Ray-
mond Hamrick.
Charged with two
{counts each of posses-
sion with intent to sell
and deliver cocaine and
two counts sale and de-
liver of cocaine were
Kenneth Williams Jr.,
27, of 112 Dashelle
Lane, and David
Wayne Bell, 51, of 116
Branchwood Circle.
Phillip L. Gordon, 52, of
258 Branchwood Circle,
who has not been lo-
cated, will be served
with one count of pos-
session with intent to
sell, deliver cocaine and
sale and delivery of co-
caine. Hamrick said.
Hamrick said the in-
vestigation involved
the distribution of co-
caine from various loca-
tions within the
Ebenezer community.
Citizens aided the in-
vestigators with the in-
formation that led to
the seizure of illegal
drugs. Hamrick said he
encourages other peo-
ple to contact the Sher-
iff’s Office with any
information regarding
the sale or manufactur-
ing of illegal drugs.
Sheriffs deputies ex-
ecuted a search warrant
at 112 Dashelle Lane
and found illegal drugs
along with firearms and
money.
Kenneth Williams Jr.
was placed in the
Cleveland County De-
tention Center under a
$29,800 secured bond.
Bell was also jailed
under a $10,000 secured
bond. Arrest warrants
have also been secured
for Gordon.
A search was also
conducted at 204 Put-
nam Place and deputies
seized a large quantity
of alcoholic beverages.
Also seized from the
residence was a
Yamaha four wheeler
that had been reported
stolen. No arrests were
made from this resi-
dence but the investiga-
tion continues.
The sheriff's office ex-
pects to make arrests of
other individuals
within the community
as the investigation
continues, Hamrick
said.
