WEAVER Editor With the economy reeling in recession and the unemployment rate in Kings Mountain and neighboring communi- ties on the rise, more crooks may pose a greater risk to shoppers this holiday season. KM Police Ofc. Chris Graham advised cus- tomers during last Thursday’s Ladies Night at Bridges Hardware to beware. He said that when exiting a store this season shoppers should be on alert. All customers, and es- pecially women, should be ever vigilant of their surroundings, but even more so when they leave a store, he said. Danger could be lurking in the shadows. But Graham said that thieves are not just wait- ing for the veil of night- time to attack an unsuspecting shopper; they'll strike anytime. With Kings Mountain's close proximity to Gasto- nia and Shelby and easy access to I-85, crooks can snatch your bags or be- longings and get back on the road in ho time at all, he said. Graham said that shoppers should be wary about being parked next to vans with sliding doors, especially when the doors are facing the. side on which a passen- ° ger would normally enter or exit their vehicle. If sliding doors are on your normal entry side, enter the vehicle on the other side or ask for a store clerk or security guard to accompany you to your car. Before getting . into T_T ony, ~ Wednesday, December 17, 2008 your car, check the back seat and immediate area surrounding the car. Once inside, lock the doors. If approached by an attacker, who tells you not to scream, Graham said that your best bet is usually to make as much noise and as much of a scene as possible, espe- cially if there is a possi- bility that you could be seen or heard by some- one else. Most parking lot crimes tend to be crimes of easiest oppor- tunity. Here are some more shopping safety tips from the Kings Mountain Po- lice Department to keep you safe this season: - Shop during daylight hours. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. - Dress casually and comfortably. - Avoid being targeted by wearing expensive jewelry. - Stay alert to your surroundings. - Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. KMPD offers safety shopping tips - Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, use checks or credit cards. - If you carry cash, carry it in your front pocket. - Keep a record of all your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. - Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have a clear sightline. - Beware of strangers approaching you for afy reason. Any time of the year, con artists may try various methods to dis- tract you. - Place shopping bags in your trunk before you reach your destination. Do not leave valuables in plain sight in the car. - Park in a well-lighted space and lock your car doors. - Remember where you parked and have your keys in hand when approaching. - When shopping with kids, teach them to go to a store clerk or security person if you get sepa- rated.
